A burst water pipe is causing flooding on Mitcham Rd between Valnay St & Franciscan Road. The road is currently open to traffic, but there is no pedestrian access on the north east pavement. Please check this post for updates. @thameswater – when will this be fixed please?

This is a beautiful, incredibly powerful piece by Rachel Stirling about her mother, Diana Rigg, dying, and wanting to end her own life. Rigg recorded herself talking, and Rachel finally managed to listen to the tapes, and shared them here. Two queens: theguardian.com/society/2023/d…

Wag the Dog is a brilliant, funny movie, with dialogue you want to stand up and clap. But is it a devastating insight into political manipulation or...something slightly less helpful? Thoughts in this morning’s @thetimes thetimes.co.uk/article/blame-…

@DonmarWarehouse I saw all three of those productions and am so glad I did. A huge loss to acting and of course her family and friends.

We’re deeply saddened by the news today of Haydn Gwynne’s death. She appeared as Stanley Baldwin in When Winston Went to War with the Wireless at the Donmar earlier this year.

This polished black glass is actually the brain matter of an unfortunate Roman, killed instantly when superheated pyroclastic flows from Vesuvius swept over the town of Herculaneum in 79 AD. During excavations in the 1960's, the charred skeletal remains of an adult male were found lying face down on a wooden bed. Archaeologists were surprised to discover shards of this glossy black material inside the victim's skull. While the obsidian-like substance was suspected to be an incredibly rare example of preserved cerebral tissues, it was not until a 2020 study in the New England Journal of Medicine that the glass was confirmed to be the man's vitrified brain matter. The man, believed to be in his mid-20's, had evidently sought refuge from the ongoing Volcanic eruption in his bed when an avalanche of hot ash blasted through the town. Temperatures of over 1000°F instantly vapourised his soft tissues and ignited his body fat, while his brain underwent the rare process of vitrification – suddenly liquifying before being rapidly cooled – essentially turning it into glass. Intriguingly, the black glass has not yet been found elsewhere in Herculaneum, suggesting an unknown variable resulting from the man's location or position as he sheltered in his bed may have contributed to the exceedingly rare preservation his brain matter.

I can scarcely imagine the grief of parents whose baby dies of a rare genetic condition. Andrew conveys it movingly and points to charities in the field that deserve support. Deep sympathies to Rycroft’s family.
Andrew Foster@andrewfoster101

Our baby boy Rycroft died at Great Ormond Street last month. The thread that follows is a little bit about who he was, and how you can help other children like him. We would love any help you can give to get Rycroft's story to as many people as possible ❤️
