Smoke, sweat, grease... all the things that were present as the record's been played literally coat the vinyl over the years, so I think you're very correct even without the mystical element (which I think is real too). Records are talismans, ancestral messages in some cases.

Pops was also the accompanying bassist on Tony Bennett’s hit 1962 recording of “I Left My Heart in San Francisco”.
I also was today years old.
I was researching some of his older works on his birthday this year - March 2 - and learned he played/recorded with Bobby "Blue" Bland as well as Little Esther Phillips and that he lived/worked in Houston for some time. I've been in Dallas for a few years now and NEVER knew that he lived in Texas.

My Pops had such an extensive discography and huge list of famous people he performed/toured with, bands he played in as a bassist or other personnel - that I am still learning about some of them. I was today years old when I found out he played on The Village People's Y.M.C.A. ??!!??? Also Dolly Parton's Coat of Many Colors. He died on this day, March 16, in 2018. @pglonghouse I was a radio DJ in NYC when they were trying to break Robbie Williams over here in the late 90s-early 00s, and got sent oodles of promo stuff, gushing endorsements to encourage play, etc. And I can confirm that it got absolutely zero play from anybody.
