Sent another 64 ETH to the Animal Welfare Fund. I encourage others to think and act more in support of our non-human cousins too! The extreme suffering we're imposing on them in the billions is not something we talk about often, but it continues to be one of the larger blights on humanity. And I'm getting optimistic that this century we can finally end it. Farming practices are improving, synthetic alternatives are improving. Also, in my recent experience, good old low-tech vegetarian and vegan food has improved massively worldwide over the last ten years; I encourage anyone who has tried it long before and given up to take second look; there are far more healthier and tastier options today than the "pasta and salad" you would often get ten years ago.

So your argument is that it's very hard to simulate all parts of physics accurately, and you think consciousness is rooted in some of the parts of our existing physics that are very hard to model, as opposed to being something that's roughly equally likely to pop up in any life-friendly Turing-complete ruleset?

One challenge I see is that: (i) it seems clear that the most socially useful markets are conditional markets ("if we {do, don't do} X, what's the chance Y will happen?") (ii) the major prediction market platforms are not launching many conditional markets I'd even say some of the most useful markets so far were de-facto conditional (eg. the "{Biden/Kamala} wins nomination" vs "{Biden/Kamala} becomes president" markets from 2024 plausibly helped lead to Democrats choosing the better candidate) I hope @Polymarket and others launch conditional markets more!

People used to theorize about all these incredibly useful and pro-social things that prediction markets would lead to in the end what we got was hair dryer temperature fraud

I think you cannot avoid this. The only way to prevent identity buying is to allow re-registration (in fact, to allow re-registration without publicly verifiable evidence!!!), and this requires "the system" to have the power to do that. The proposed solution to this was multiple orb manufacturers, and perhaps some kind of trusted hardware attestation. The system would be able to remove the authority of orbs from any manufacturer found acting maliciously.

Without these markets you just wont get proper depth, tight spreads and the habit of participating. You cant start straight away with hedging and complex decision markets - nobody will show up. This isnt a bug, its a growth stage I used to be more open to these kinds of arguments, but more recently I am more inclined to think that they are usually galaxy brain self-justification vitalik.eth.limo/general/2025/1… For every product that has had this justification and successfully transitioned to the mature stage, there are over ten where the corposlop stage was the only product-market fit they would ever get, and the idea that that's only a transition period was used as an excuse to keep idealistic employees from quitting and shield against negative PR. Similar to socialism -> communism: the idea that dictatorship of the proletariat is only a "transition stage" always proves to be a failure. Community building is path-dependent: people are non-fungible, and so if you want to get to the community that will sustain your thing at its stage 10, you need to have something already appealing to *that* community (and not some totally disjoint community) at stage 1. The truly successful products that empower people start that way from day 1. Signal did not bootstrap by marketing to criminals, Fileverse did not bootstrap by introducing gambling features, Ethereum itself did not bootstrap by targeting gamblers first. There was an ETH token and there was a sale, but even there from the first day, the largest attention went to the positive use cases. Believe in somETHing, and believe in it from the very first stage.
