The Freak Circus
Polycirco Heat/Rut Headcanons
In general, monsters go through seasonal heats or ruts, though the specifics (such as how often and how its presented) are determined by their species and even the individual. Their cycles are all different, but from time to time they all will line up for a few days to a week— and that's when the circus is completely closed.
Otherwise, they handle situations one at a time if someone's particular act or show needs to be canceled or modified, depending on how 'strong' the cycle is (humans don't usually cause or respond to monster heats/ruts, but there are some exceptions).
For context: ruts normally refer to 'male' breeding seasons and heats to 'female' breeding seasons, but I'm using them in reference if the individual is driven by a need to breed or a need to be bred.
------
Pierrot very rarely ruts, mostly because he is one of the most receptive to pheromones out of the whole group. So if he's close enough to a new cycle, another troupe member in season will often trigger a heat. This is probably a good thing, because a Pierrot in heat is a lot easier to reason with than a Pierrot in rut. Think of it like trying to work with a puppy as opposed to a wolf.
If there's someone else in the circus actively in season, Pierrot is usually the individual they'll spend time with, if only because he is the most flexible nine times out of ten and can take whatever physical position he needs to in order to satiate his partner/s. If there's no other circus member available, that's when you're his designated stress-relief toy for the duration because he absolutely CANNOT run his shows when he's in season at all.
Harlequin is a bit of a coin flip, his cycles seem to depend a lot on the weather, predominantly the average temperature for whether he'll rut or go into heat. He's much better about controlling all but the worst of it. It actually took a few cycles after living with them before you realized when Harlequin WAS in season, just because he was very good at hiding it and often tries to run his shows without interruption.
Despite being known as a charmer, he ironically will never approach another member of the troupe (or you) directly about joining him for an evening or two— unless someone else is in season he will do everything in his power to make it sound like he's doing THEM a favor, and only in his most desperate heats will he beg.
Jester, like Harlequin, is very enigmatic and secretive of the details for his seasons when its not relevant or important— he puts the circus first and has only ever closed his tent once or twice, though that was usually right before the circus closed entirely for a few days due to 'performer health issues'. You'd like to assume the majority of his seasons are ruts, but it's hard to tell for certain given how dominant Jester normally can be.
If you catch him at the right time, in the right way, or maybe if one or more other members of the circus is in rut themselves, he'd be a bit less opposed to being passed around, worshiped and bred deep. Those are usually the nights where you're pushed to the very limits of your stamina and need time to recover afterwards.
Ticket Taker says that he predominantly ruts, though you have a feeling that he'd go into a full-on heat for Doctor or Jester and perhaps even you if your cards are played right and you've established a deep sense of trust with him. Being in season at all is very vulnerable for them after all, and Ticket Taker seems to be the one most bothered at being unable to control his emotions in such a state.
He has to be forced to admit if he needs a night or two off— Ticket Taker's work ethic is so steadfast that it's genuinely worrisome sometimes, and while you can't naturally detect the same subtle queues that the other troupe members do, Ticket Taker has at least started to respect your concern more when you offer yourself for stress or sexual relief. He seems to be the most ritualistic or 'traditional' when it comes to stuff like heats and ruts, often wanting to hunt or chase you down before actively having sex. And if you manage to make him let loose, you will be covered in marks.
Doctor is.... odd. He goes into season, but his cycles are the most irregular of them all and are completely unpredictable. He can't describe whether what he feels is that of a heat or a rut– it's all the same to him, a feeling that's already very hard to describe, but it doesn't mean he doesn't enjoy and indulge in it. He just doesn't care whether he's the one being bred or the one doing the breeding more often than not.
It's just probably the time where he'd consider himself the least... proper. Doctor will NOT run his tent in any form when he's in season, as he is incredibly volatile and would much rather enjoy the company of another in the circus or be left to his own devices until his cycle is through the worst of it.
