@Timodc Tim, he puts on the show and the media splash it all over their coverage--mutually assured distraction. But you knew that, right?

@nytdavidbrooks Appreciate your quest for a more person-centered culture. I share the concern that we are ignoring psychological capacity building . But as humanistic psychologists Maslow & Rogers said 60yrs ago we must focus on consciousness-ways of being- not skill sets. Open to emergent.

There is one skill that lies at the heart of any healthy family, organization or nation: the ability to see someone else deeply and make them feel valued, heard and understood. On October 24, I will be publishing a new book, “How to Know a Person,” on how to master this skill.

@davidaxelrod You are right about it takes to nurture a democracy but what you describe is a level of mental development that only a minority reach. It also requires spaces designed for emotional growth. The right's assault on education at all levels means collective maturity is in reverse.

Amid the picnics, parades & fireworks, let's spend a minute thinking about what democracy requires from each of us: passionate engagement & thoughtful restraint; the ability to appreciate our common humanity and search for common ground. Not easy today but necessary. Happy 4th!

1/3 of all mental health 'treatments' in England involve no human interaction at all. Patients are rather offered apps, web-based interventions & self-guided CBT online courses, instead of face-to-face talking therapy.... As if more bots are what we need. theguardian.com/society/2023/j…

7/ A vital part of childhood is the rituals of discovery: the journey of finding what excites you and what connects you to others. I worry that those rituals are being replaced by the algorithm. And kids are in the dark about what they have lost.

1/ A had recent chilling conversation with a group of teenagers and I want to tell you about it. They were upset by my bill to ban social media's use of algorithmic boosting to teens. This practice is used to curate (often harmful) content to keep kids addicted to screens.

@Hannah_YD I hear your struggle Hannah--much like mine while president of an under resourced university. I eventually learned how to expand what I considered resources. Making a way out of no way. Sharing both frustration and the meaning with companions was part of my resource well.

Leading an organisation can be a hard, painful slog. Today I felt vulnerable, isolated & overwhelmed. Knowing that the work is beautiful and meaningful helps but sometimes it’s good to acknowledge that our sector is under resourced. The struggle feels very real for the workforce.

@thoughtland @NicolaSturgeon Interesting how similar her words are to those of Jacinda Ardhern when she stepped down. What can we learn about how toxic political roles are to strong women.

A scunner. But it’s been evident for a while that @NicolaSturgeon wants to do good works globally, based on high principles. Being a Scots indy politician, battling choobs day in day out, maybe not her best pathway for that. I wish her all the very best thenational.scot/news/23322727.…

My heart is heavy at the news of killings at MSU. Spartan Village and the Plant Research lab were my first homes in the US in 1969. Sparrow Hospital saved my life when I got a serious infection. Somehow those early connections stay deep. Go Spartans.
