Psychiatrists, can I ask: if someone has no delusions or thought disorder, but is hallucinating, yet has full insight into their hallucination, would you consider them psychotic? (I always assumed not, but I just read the opposite, so I want to check!) @awaisaftab @ProfRobHoward

@JonathanShedler It was an important and *fair* discussion. What the research actually shows, not what it seems to show—and what it is set up to show, what it is capable, given both the parameters and the nature of the enterprise, of showing—is far too often left out of the discourse.

@DavidPuder Okay that's the part I really wanted the writer to dilate on: the expansion of IFS into the "spiritual" realm. That shit is dangerous. Say what you will of CBT, but I think Beck's greatest legacy is his total and vigorous rejection of guru-ism.

Reading a very critical article on Internal Family Systems (IFS) this am.
Made me curious to find any study on IFS with an active control. I found only one but maybe some IFS fans can point me to others. Here is the one I found:

@DavidPuder Would love to talk to you about this. It's an odd piece in that it's kind of about a bunch of things at once: the IFS equivalent of wild psychoanalysis; the guru model of psychotherapy; therapy training and $; the troubled teen industry ... the clinical complexities get lost

The article critical of IFS seems to critique a lone wolf IFS based center and one practitioner who turned kids against their parents as he uncovered sexual abuse that likely was largely from leading the witness with highly charged sexual questions.

@JonathanShedler It was interesting to read this sentence high up in the piece: "In IFS, a part isn’t a metaphor." I've always understood "parts" to be metaphorical. How else could one possibly think of them?

Just finished this essay in the New Yorker on aphantasia. Very exceptional and - I don’t feel this often about New Yorker essays - groundbreaking. Instead of the cliches of the “apple visualization test” there is a reevaluation of the spectrum of human experience in its totality.
