The Toledo Zoo & Aquarium has welcomed a delightful new addition—a four-week-old giraffe calf named Eugene, born January 17, 2026, to first-time mom Lily and dad Rocket. Weighing in at around 130 pounds at birth, this playful youngster is already a global social media darling, largely thanks to his standout feature: a quirky, prominent tuft of dark hair perched right on top of his head like a signature mohawk or mini coif. After inviting the public to submit name ideas, the zoo selected Eugene—a choice staff say perfectly matches his charming, eccentric personality as he grows more confident and curious each day. Eugene is currently bonding beautifully with the zoo's herd of seven other giraffes in their indoor habitat, where he's showing plenty of interest in his elders while thriving under Lily's care. Visitors can peek at him through indoor viewing windows, and excitement is building for his big outdoor debut in the Africa exhibit this spring, once temperatures reliably hit 50°F or warmer.
