Mehdi Hasan says that Israel and Gaza were never “neighbors” because Israel occupied Gaza. No. Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005. Occupation requires “effective control.” If Israel had effective control, October 7 would not have happened. This should be obvious.

@IhabHassane I have a sense that you think the term holocaust only applies to the atrocities suffered by the Jews during WWII. Holocaust actually means total destruction caused by war or fire and that’s exactly what’s happening in Gaza nowadays.

It’s very disturbing to see so many replies and quote retweets claiming there’s a "Holocaust in Gaza." The suffering of our people in Gaza is undeniable and horrific, but comparing it to the Holocaust not only cheapens the unimaginable atrocity of the Holocaust but also disrespects the actual agony Palestinians are experiencing today. Most of these comparisons come from Western Holocaust deniers, aiming to diminish the Holocaust itself as they continue to deny its reality. Each tragedy is significant in its own way, and comparing them does a disservice to both. We can speak out about the atrocities in Gaza and advocate for justice without altering history or disrespecting Holocaust victims.
