I know about last-child but that will only work for the last item on the list. Whereas I want to hide it for the last item *on each line* of the list, without knowing in advance how many lines there are or how many items are on each line?

If you're using flexbox to display a list, with flex-wrap and auto-sizing so that there'll be a different number of items on each row, is there a way to show something (e.g. a line / divider) between each of the items on the same row, but not at the end of the rows?
