#IndieMusicians, we need to talk about generative AI. I know it's fun. I know it can make good music, especially if the final result has been modified by humans rather than just built purely from a prompt. I don't judge you for using it. But it's not right for the Indie Music Showcase. It's like submitting a cake from a box to a baking contest - even if it's good and your family enjoys it at home, it's not correct for that situation. I know there are people who will argue about where to draw the line. Why is AI not okay but MIDI is? Why not restrict music to physical instruments only? My answer to that is: this is my show, I get to set the rules and I use MIDI. Feel free to start your own show for physical instruments, or your own show for AI-assisted music. You'll definitely find an audience for either one. My goal is to give a platform to human musicians who sweat over every single note, regardless of whether they used a physical or virtual instrument to record it, and who just want it to be heard by other humans. As I've been listening to IMS Radio over the past week, I've found some suspicious tracks I hadn't noticed before and run them through SubmitHub's AI Song Checker. If they were flagged as AI-generated, which includes human-modified AI as well as pure AI, I removed them. I will be using this tool going forward to confirm that all songs I play were made by humans. Songs tagged as "Inconclusive" will get the benefit of the doubt - some of my own tracks fall into this category, the tool isn't perfect! For the record, using non-generative AI for say, mastering the track is not against the submission rules. But if a song gets flagged by the tool, it's out - I have no way to distinguish different uses of AI. I hope this makes sense and you understand my position. We can still be friends on X, and you're still welcome to hang out in the live chat. I bear nobody any ill will and I'm not out to start a war. If you have questions or need clarification on any point, please let me know!
