One of the BJP's dangerous plans is to “gerrymander” all Lok Sabha seats to its advantage for the 2029 elections
The proposed Bills remove all Constitutional safeguards on delimitation, giving full power to the Delimitation Commission which the govt itself will appoint and direct.
We have seen how BJP does this - it hijacked delimitation in Assam and Jammu and Kashmir, where it split up anti-BJP regions and communities for electoral advantage. As a result,
- some seats have 25 lakh voters, while some have only 8 lakh
- some seats have 12 Vidhan Sabha segments, while some have only 6
- some seats are broken into pieces without connection, sometimes divided by rivers or mountains
Having captured the Election Commission, PM Modi is confident that he can capture the Delimitation Commission too. The Congress will not allow this to happen.
Delimitation should be based on a transparent policy framework, developed after wide consultations with a consensus. Indians of all communities and States should feel confident that they will be represented and their voices will be heard.
This is the only way forward to protect and strengthen our democracy.

A couple of years ago, I moderated a discussion at Leela in Chennai, organised by the Madras Management Association and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung. After the session, someone came and told me, 'You did a good job... You are from Kerala?' I said yes. 'That heavy Mallu accent is evident. Maybe you can take care of that'. There were two Germans on the panel. I asked this gentleman whether he listened to them speaking. He said yes. 'Did they speak like the English or like the Germans?" He said Germans. 'Would you like to go tell them to 'fix' their accent?' I hope he got the point. I have always been commented on my 'heavy accent'. So what? I am an Indian, who was born, raised and schooled in Kerala, and I speak English, a foreign language which I learned while growing up, like an Indian and a Malayalee. That's absolutely fine.

This is not delimitation. This is political re-engineering at the cost of Southern states.
The proposal to increase Lok Sabha seats from 543 to 850 will systematically reduce the voice of the South, while rewarding unchecked population growth elsewhere. This is nothing but punishing progress and good governance.
Let’s be absolutely clear: Congress fully supports Women’s Reservation. In fact, it was Smt. Sonia Gandhi’s vision and commitment that brought this dream to the national agenda. We demand that it be implemented without linking it to delimitation or seat expansion.
I urge the Union Govt to not hide behind women’s empowerment to push a deeply unfair political agenda. Rushing such a massive restructuring of India’s democracy during elections, without transparency or consultation, is deeply suspicious and unacceptable.
India’s strength lies in balance not in domination. In fairness and not in manipulation.
The Southern states will stand united, speak in one voice, and defend the true spirit of federalism. We will not allow the South to be politically marginalised.
