If there are no upsets in the knockout round (ha!) the current paths to gold for Canada and USA could not be more different. Canada's likeliest opponents are Czechia and Germany. USA's likeliest opponents are Sweden and Finland.

Mattias Ekholm, signed to a 3x$4M extension by EDM, is a veteran two-way puck-moving defenceman who has had great success as the stabilizing presence on the Oilers' top pairing. A calm and patient transition passer, struggled a bit coming off injury in the Final.

My model still loves Mattias Ekholm a great deal thanks to his strong resume. We'll see if he can bounce back after returning from injury, but as long as he can stay at a second-pair level this is a great deal. Top comp: Ryan Suter, who did stay at that level.

The best player in the world sacrifices $12.6M over the next two seasons to (hopefully) finally win his first Stanley Cup. A truly unbelievable bargain.

@JakeSundall @NHL_Watcher No way that’s happening with any coach this year, they aren’t miracle men. 2-3 years and I think they’ll finally be on the verge of breaking through. They’re relying on a lot of great young talent but they’ll need plenty of reps in the NHL to solidify themselves at that level.

Leon Draisaitl ain’t going anywhere. What a morning in Oil Country. Elliotte reporting 8 years around 14 million per and this means Connor will be an Oiler for life as well. The paradeS in downtown Edmonton will be stuff of legends.
