@maxdubler Better idea is to eliminate central planning and go back to the free market where property owners decide want to build instead of politicians and bureaucrats (who will get it wrong creating imbalances).

My Big Dumb Idea for fixing zoning is that we should do away with the complex population growth projections and simply require every city to have zoned capacity for 5x its current population, updated every 5 years.
DC should be zoned for 1,625,000 homes.

@TahraHoops Respecting property rights is only a sliver of the problem. The other massive problem is taxes and regulation on building is enormous in CA adding $200,000 to the cost of every new house. Lower cost housing is impossible.

Living in California can almost blackpill you into being a single-issue voter, and that issue is housing.
Streamlining permitting and enforcing the law so local cities can't delay or block new development is exactly what I want to hear from a candidate.

High prices hurt working families by reducing their purchasing power and eat away their savings. Government doesn't have that problem. As prices rise over time, government revenues increase right along with them. But somehow, it’s still not enough. They keep pushing for a bigger slice of the pie by proposing even more tax hikes. Both are a problem. CA has the highest taxes in nearly EVERY category which included taxes to build. Anyone building a house must pay extortion fees to govt school districts, city, and fire dept. It's around $150,000 per house which is why there are no low priced homes.

NYC’s budget gap is $5.4 billion. Mamdani’s plan was to tax those earning over $1 million. Albany blocked it. His fallback: a 9.5% property tax hike — the first in nearly two decades — hitting over 3 million households and 100,000 commercial properties. High earners can establish residency in Florida or Texas and erase the tax liability entirely. Property owners can’t pick up the building and leave. That’s why the bill lands on the middle class. And why people who were already considering leaving now have one more reason to go.

The thing you have to understand about California is that outcomes literally do not matter. It does not matter how much Democrats fail here. They will get 70% of the vote in LA and 80-90% of the vote in the Bay Area forever. And that’s why it’s only going to get worse.

Can Progressives govern? It really is becoming increasingly clear that no, they cannot. They are beholden to public sector unions (SEIU, AFT, NEA, etc), and see budgets primarily as redistribution and retribution mechanisms, not as the necessary source of funds for effective state services.
