For years I gave the benefit of the doubt to Fauci & others that they erred on the side of caution (Precautionary Principle) rather than they lied to us.
I'm sorry to say that the latter is true on masks, school/business closures, social distancing & even what, exactly, the vaccine can and cannot do.
We will be paying the price for these lies for decades to come, especially when the next pandemic hits and no one believes what scientists and medical experts recommend. @geraldposner analysis nails it:

He was brave because he said up to the mob even though it cost him greatly. As someone who also stood up to the mob, I can tell you it was tough. I got hassled by police. Thrown out of stores.
I wrote publicly about my research to the (over)reaction to covid. My writing was blackballed by the traditional media.
You can speculate about "what if the facts where different" well they weren't.
