A few thoughts on biking in Madison. 1. Lots of bike racks, at pretty much every business. They are nice staple racks placed correctly. 2. Cargo bikes are not rare. I've only seen 1 but had two folks stop me at the grocery store to tell me they have them at home.

@IsaacRowlett Having only lived in Madison 4 years, I can’t say I understand it a lot but I have found much more focus on pro housing views than I did in Austin. Lots of people don’t want to pave over farmland and understand that means higher density

Mother’s Day is Sunday, so I was card-shopping this morning and came across this turd. Car dependence doesn’t just rob children of their independence, it also imposes massive physical, financial, and psychological costs on primary caregivers.

the argument that pops up on here a lot about how real blue collar americans need to drive huge $60,000 trucks and city slicker libs just don’t understand becomes way funnier when you actually go to a construction site and the parking lot is full of 10 year old nissan altimas

@slyarak My current home is in a district with 30’ setbacks! It’s bonkers and I have heard from folks who want to add a porch or even a bay window who can’t because of it. 😖

The underlying problem is that the rights of way in our city are, almost universally, TOO WIDE! Even with a zero front setback, on 2 sides of an entire block, the buildings would feel VERY far apart.

Great thread here. The replies make it clear that many folks don't understand that the prescribed setback is *from the lot line*, which you generally cannot see. Let me give an example.
Adam Greenfield@agreenfield319

2. Staff: "We need 15' setbacks to preserve open space." This argument doesn't convince CM Véla. Front lawns are not used by many Austinites and consume water, money, and time. Staff is implying they, not homeowners, should decide on the best use of the front of the property.

Why do we have so many ticks now? It was less when I was a kid. Wonder what tick population hundreds of years ago. Feels like something out of whack.

@cyclesixmile I had my first in Chicago and everyone goes to Prentice. Super fancy granite countertops (?!?!) etc. 8000 babies/yr. I went to hospital 1.5 miles away, could bike/bus there. Great midwives and great experience. Like—what matters is not how fancy the room is but the staff quality

Quite a few people told us before both babies were born, I'm sure with good intentions, that if we delivered in West Bloomfield the facilities and experience would be "nicer". What if I told you that Detroit women and babies deserve a nice birth experience too?

Contingent already but this 3 bed 2 bath in Rogers park on a street that dead ends into the lake for $325K is wild. You can even see the beach/lake from the back office. Intact floor plan and unpainted woodwork to boot. Jealous! realtor.com/realestateandh…

I have no idea how this makes any sense. When I was in college I took ~3 hour long courses every day (and I had a light course load) I would probably spend at least 3 hours a day on homework/projects/studying (and I'm a notorious procrastinator)
Matthew Yglesias@mattyglesias

“Full time” college students spend less than three hours per day in class or doing homework. A downstream consequence of the marketization of higher education — the customers are getting what they want and what they want is easy classes. slowboring.com/p/college-stud…

Way too many people to thank individually, but I do want to say I'm very grateful for former Comm. Marisa Novara for hiring me, and current Comm. Lissette Castañeda for bringing her leadership, and everyone who has helped invent DOH's Policy Bureau with me since 2019. <3

Hello! This week is my last week working as Director of Policy at the Chicago Department of Housing. It's been four and a half years, and I'm incredibly proud of my work here. I'm so grateful to my colleagues for everything that their work has made possible. A few highlights:
