@amelia_tweetz False dichotomy. Plenty of issues with universal care as it is rationed. In many cases even the willingness to pay for care beyond what is rationed is impossible, requiring travel to a different country to receive care that a bureaucrat decided you aren’t sick enough for yet.

Very disappointed in my fellow citizens tonight. Went to a lecture at our local public television station. The topic of going to Mars came up, the speaker declared it to be a “scam,” and the audience hooted and applauded their approval. How did we get to where our “elites” (there were probably 1.7 college degrees per person there tonight) became so negative about exploring the new frontier?

When you pay taxes for universal healthcare, you're not "paying for lazy people's healthcare." You're paying for your own healthcare instead of premiums, copays, and deductibles. Why can't people grasp this? Look at it as something that benefits you and your family, not just other people. You'd actually save more money under a tax-funded healthcare system than you do with the current for-profit system.

With few exceptions, checking bags on a flight is an IQ test. I’ve lived on 3 continents, traveled weekly for business, monthly for pleasure, and did 3-4 long trips a year. You can fit everything you need in a carry-on, buy clothes when you get there, or FedEx it ahead.

At 36, one of my biggest regrets is that I didn't pay as much attention to my undergraduate courses in 19th and 20th century literature and American lit. I was (and still am) really interested in ancient and medieval literature and while that's great, I think I would much better understand specific historical and literary references had I not skimmed, say, "The Brothers Karamazov." I did take a seminar on James Joyce and that was a doozy. I remember slogging through A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. I'm trying to remedy this literary chasm of my own doing while chasing two young kids and working a full-time job. Last year I finished The Iliad and Gone With the Wind and I'm now listening to In Cold Blood on Audible and am reading The Count of Monte Cristo. It's a daunting task and I have lots of catching up to do, but it's a goal of mine to read the classics. Anyone else in a similar boat?
