Tony on TV in America. When Tony made his ‘once in a lifetime’ trip to the US a few weeks ago he was so well looked after and, some of his trip was filmed by a station called @NinePBS - based in St. Louis. They were kind enough to send over the piece that they made and I was able to play it to Tony when we got together recently. It was hard for him to watch but it was beautifully. Well. I thought The Odyssey was a masterpiece. Cinematic perfection. Turned to my husband and he thought it was fine, no more. Mind blown.

When I wrote my piece on World Cup pundits, I wasn’t able to have more than 3 from the BBC but, in all honesty, I wanted to shove Micah Richards in there so I’m updating my 6 to a magnificent 7. This is what I wrote about Micah MICAH RICHARDS 9/10 When I first worked with Micah on Football Focus he was a wonderful breath of fresh air. His laugh was infectious, he was great fun to be around and you could tell he was desperate to listen and learn. He burst onto the scene in the best way possible. He has become something very rare in punditry - someone who cuts across to those who rarely watch. Whether he is working with Roy Keane or Gary Lineker he always shines - even though he still doesn’t know what a half-volley is. At this World Cup has been the ‘senior’ BBC pundit alongside Joe Hart and Wayne Rooney and they have looked brilliant because Micah has supported them so generously. The BBC coverage of Argentina was first class and finding out afterwards that Micah had lost his dad before the game made his contribution even more remarkable. I confess to having a tear in my eye when I read about that. Micah Richards is a rare gem and, in addition to that, if there was ever a pundit Royal Rumble, he’d trounce the lot of them.

Final final thought… It’s not that Tuchel is a bad manager - he isn’t. He got England to within a whisker of a World Cup final and he made some good decisions in other games at this tournament. I don’t think he should be sacked but I do hope, in time, his changes his opinion on having ‘no regrets’. He spoke of ‘bravery’ throughout the tournament and then his team retreated to their own penalty box and gave the best player we may have ever seen space to whip the ball in time and time again. Scaloni after the game… “We smelt blood when England hesitated".

@williamnhutton It was a good strike Will but, we had so many defenders on at that point there was no-one on the edge of the box to block him. Bellingham nearly got there but England were SO deep.

Thomas Tuchel will be endlessly criticised for being too defensive too soon. But Fernandez’s 85 th minute strike was a wonder goal. The margins at this level are so fine. England were a few minutes and 3/4 inches from pulling it off. Cut a great team and manager a little slack.

My guess is that if Spain score early on Sunday they won’t defend in the lowest of low blocks ever. They will calmly dominate possession, so as to keep the ball away from Messi et al. That’s the best form of defence. And to do it, you need to keep/put ball players on the pitch.

It must be so frustrating for the players that England are here again. Thomas Tuchel said he ‘no regrets’ but he surely knows that the first World Cup final in 60 years was within grasp. In that second half we seemed to do EXACTLY what Argentina wanted us to do… We were a goal up They had both their centre halves on yellow cards They were worried about us running at them with pace They were struggling to maintain possession in the final 3rd We retreated We never put them under pressure We took off the men who could harm them and replaced them with defenders We gifted them the ball in the final 3rd Wayne Rooney said afterwards that the players will have disagreed with what the manager was trying to do. It was there for England… Argentina were creaking. Scaloni made good substitutions but we opened the door. This was about tactics not talent.

Final one… and then I’m concentrating on @TheOpen… England had 12% possession after going a goal up last night! 12 PERCENT.
