I now conclude my time as a Senator in the Federal Parliament. It’s been such a privilege to represent South Australia. Unconstrained by party lines, I never held back and I never voted against my conscience. I’m proud of what my team and I achieved. No regrets! #auspol

Defence were tasked in 2009 with replacing our Collins Class submarines. 17 years later - not even a contract! (ignoring the French contract which Defence spent $4B on and did not get a submarine from). This takes an incredible level of incompetence to achieve. Virginia's are good submarines - the US can't deliver us any. The UK SSN-AUKUS is a bespoke design and the UK submarine industry is a cluster fiasco. The answer is simple - and I wrote extensively on this in the 2010's in APDR (I do not approach this from hindsight), and others have also written about it - buy 20 off-the-self submarines. There are many submarines which offer exceptional capabilities with a much smaller price tag and with very little delivery risk.

@MrRexPatrick @TaxpayersParty @JAParker29 @JAParker29 acknowledges the risks. But the fact is, we have scores of RAN personnel embedded and queuing for AUKUS. And company investment gearing up for land-base support in Australia. What’s your solution to a situation that was decades in the making?

.@JAParker29, smart as she is, is the product of the same system that breeds officers that go on to lead our Defence procurement organisation - which delivers costly failures over and again. She naively believes strategy and enthusiasm can overcome project risk🤦‍♂️. #auspol

In today’s @smh I discuss why geography matters in maritime security, 🇦🇺’s dependencies and vulnerabilities, & why maritime power projection is critical to our prosperity & security. It is easy to be alarmist. It is harder to develop practical policy. Read the article here: 🔗smh.com.au/national/austr… @DefenceUwa @LowyInstitute @NSC_ANU

So - no debate? Not prepared to have your ideas tested? Not prepared to pull my propositions apart? The offer stands. #PotemkimVillage

Oh @MrRexPatrick you didn’t ‘call me out’. You continued a trend of attacking others service. I’m going to disengage here - if you feel strongly perhaps publish a response in the SMH. I’m not sure the editors of major national papers tend to accept your submissions - I’ll leave you to discuss with them. Have a wonderful day.

The Iranian Navy has been destroyed. The closure of the Straits is the result of the threat of ships being attacked 1) from land, 2) from mines and 3) (perhaps) swarming small boats armed with missiles/drones. With the exception of 1) - submarines can carry land attach missiles, but other naval or air assets are likely a better choice - submarines are not the ideal naval platform. Unfortunately, the RAN has few surface units and a moribund mine warfare capability - the first the result of bad naval shipbuilding procurement management and the second the result of projects like AUKUS that are starving other parts of the ADF of funds. 👇Indicative #AUKUS opportunity cost👇.

I am happy to debate you on this, anywhere, anytime. I think that would be a useful activity. Proposing strategies that are not implementable is dangerous - hence my calling you out. I know you have never run a project before - take a look at the assessments of US and UK submarine build capabilities. Look at the manning issues - see some of RADM Peter Briggs' (retired) work on this. Please research and write a piece on these aspect of the program. Lines like "Australia has built and sustained complex capabilities before. There is no reasons to assume this one is beyond us" are patriotic - but are the very thoughts that have brought Defence procurement unstuck time and time again. Look at the moribund state of our Navy Jennifer. To get you started in your preparation for a debate 👉 michaelwest.com.au/aukus-submarin…

For those interested in @MrRexPatrick’s position on #AUKUS, here is a podcast we recorded together in 2025. It’s a useful reminder of how these arguments hold up under scrutiny. Listeners can draw their own conclusions… 😂 Sorry you got a little flustered Rex— perhaps tweets are a better medium for you. abc.net.au/listen/program…

@mattieudevalise @JAParker29 Naval officers of long experience are not immune from criticism. Jennifer engages in public discussion - she can expect some pushback when she is misguided in what she says. Jennifer has never run a project. 'Naive' is appropriate.

Jennifer, who I trained in acoustic warfare in a previous life, and I have talked about it, including during a joint radio interview. The problem is her strategy is, a) expensive and b) divorced from reality. I have tried the approach you have suggested - I'm just going to have to take a different approach now.

@MrRexPatrick @JAParker29 Rex, email her, teach and guide. We’re all better contributors to effecting change when we work together. But sadly, defence procurement, the IT section of it esp. in my experience, and even big infrastructure projects (aka nation building ones) all fall for it.

The US want 66 nuclear attack subs. They only have 49. Since 2011 the US has being trying to build 2 boats per year, and never achieved it. They’re currently at 1.2 boats per year. They can’t deliver to us. Jennifer knows this but never addresses it in her fantasy writing. #auspol

Another procurement controversy brought to you by @DefenceAust. It’s an organisation that doesn’t understand risk. Its minister understands risk even less. #AUKUS is loaded with risk and is 50 times more costly. It won’t end well for taxpayers or our security. #SNAFU #auspol

Liquid Fuel Emergency Fact #5: Decreasing the fuel excise may increase fuel demand 👎. Decreasing the fuel excise will ease the cost of living 👍 - and is a good cost of living measure because it reduces inflation 👍. #auspol

Departmental secretaries’ million dollar salaries are set by the Remuneration Tribunal without reference to State/international secretary salaries (which are much lower), or performance. The Tribunal blindly sets the salary, YOU get to pay🤦‍♂️. #scam #auspol michaelwest.com.au/fat-cat-salari…
