Ben White's return to the England fold after his lengthy self-imposed exile borders on the insulting to Trent Alexander-Arnold, who continues to be overlooked by Thomas Tuchel at right-back.
Reece James injured, Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier retired internationally and now the withdrawal of Jarell Quansah (seen as right-back cover by Tuchel). And Alexander-Arnold still not called. Real Madrid's right-back in the Champions League. A player whose passing can change games. A tournament shootout penalty-taker.
White drafted into squad because of injury to Quansah. Be interesting to see the reaction of England fans - let alone Alexander-Arnold. White has to explain why he turned his back on England for three and a half years. Expect some skilled FA video content.
Gareth Southgate said in March 2024 that White had indicated to him that he didn't want to be considered for England. There's always been speculation about a fall-out between White and Southgate's assistant Steve Holland (Southgate denied this).
Tuchel clearly doesn't rate Alexander-Arnold, a situation that gets ever stranger. White obviously a more defensive full-back; can get forward but lacks Alexander-Arnold's impact. He did well when coming on for Dani Carvajal against Atletico last night. Made Vinicius Junior's second goal.
Harvey Barnes, who has one cap, comes in for the injured Eberechi Eze for the squad to face Uruguay on Friday and Japan on March 31. #ENG

Trent Alexander-Arnold plays right-back for Real Madrid. Started home and away against Manchester City. He won the Premier League and Champions League at right-back with Liverpool. He’s used to dealing with pressure. He’s taken a decisive tournament penalty. He’s played in the World Cup before.
He has occasional defensive deficiencies but he brings a long-range passing skill that few possess. Are England that blessed at right-back that they don’t need Alexander-Arnold? That he isn’t amongst the best 30 outfield players available to Thomas Tuchel?

@GrantSlattery1 @AaronBower It goes without saying that at the time the records were actually set, the Rugby League was far, far stronger than the NSWRL.
English

@AaronBower They said the games greatest, which is correct.. Game meaning professional rugby league.. playing park footy in England isn’t THE game or professional rugby league. More like our school level. My mum scored over 50 playing that..

@RugbyLeagueGold And let's not forget (Aussie) Brian Bevan who scored 796 tries.
English

Magnificent achievement by Alex Johnston. Genuinely historical for the game- but let's not forget Ken Irvine who scored-
40 tries for Australia
36 tries for NSW
7 tries for City
83 tries in rep footy.
I tweeted last year that i hoped Irvine's true stats weren't forgotten.

@TomasLAllen @OfficialECFC @FCBarcelona @NUFC I suppose if Lincoln City make the Champions League then it's possible.
English

It was a tale of two cities and two very different football grounds for an @FCBarcelona fan who turned up at the wrong St James Park last night 🏟️
The Spanish supporter, who made the journey to Devon from London, turned up at the turnstiles of Exeter City’s Adam Stansfield stand last night, expecting to see his team take on @NUFC. It was only when he showed his ticket to staff that he realised his mistake.
But he got to see a got to see a game of football – Exeter City staff sorted him out a ticket for the game against Lincoln under the lights of the real St James Park!
Adam Spencer, Supporter Experience Officer at Exeter City, said: “One of our volunteers came to the office to let us know that this guy had turned up expecting to see FC Barcelona. His English wasn’t great, but from what we could gather, he’d come from London. My guess is he’d put St James Park in his phone and then just followed the directions from there.
“He was pretty gutted and a bit embarrassed. So, we sorted him out a ticket and he got to watch a game at the real St James Park. He’d be welcome back any time.”

@SunApology @Jo_Marney I don't like to judge people on how they look, but she started it. Have you seen Henry Bolton? How can she criticise others for a lack of standards?
English

Hi @Jo_Marney. Talking about "standards", it reminds me of you in 2018. That 4th bullet point hits especially hard all things considered.

Just because your reporters are abroad, it doesn’t mean that they need to dress like they’ve just come out the gym. I dare say both of these reporters are staying in 5 star hotels and probably dress smarter for dinner each evening than they do for the BBC News. No standards.

@melindafarrell It's the national sport because it's national. The two main football codes are far more popular but, essentially, regional.
English

This may be controversial but, despite all the rhetoric about cricket being the national sport, it’s a niche sport outside an 8-week window. Paywalls and cultural reasons. Huge challenge for CA to overcome. Hopefully they can make inroads.
