A7 Games are the "practice" component. It is my favorite way to formatively assess. I can watch for accuracy and slide in to have conversations about thinking. You can tell so much by just observing during game play. #elemmathchat

@kloneal2 I absolutely agree - time always seem to be an issue so we push what we think will "go fast" when in reality if we'd just slow down and develop understanding we'd see the payoff in the long haul!

Or perhaps we are so hesitant to teach models bc we've never sat down long enough to grapple w/them ourselves. Therefore we find it easier (& cooler) to provide tricks & rules to push Ss to faster understanding (ie: our ideal of fluency). #sadreality

A5 I wonder sometimes if teachers don't really understand the difference between additive and multiplicative thinking therefore, Ss don't develop their mult reasoning. I'm always surprised at how many Ts are excited when kids can skip count quickly to get products. #elemmathchat

A3 The beauty of the contextual image is that all kids can "see" it their own way - how it makes most sense to them! #elemmathchat

A2 Context gives a way for the numbers to have meaning. It provides the anchor for understanding. #elemmathchat
