Wall Street strategists are becoming increasingly worried about the possibility of higher inflation than anticipated, which has led to concerns that investors may be overly optimistic about the US economy's chances of a smooth landing. The main concern is that inflation could enter a period of stagflation, characterized by a resurgence in price increases alongside a slowdown in economic growth. This phenomenon was famously witnessed in the 1970s and 1980s when a brief decline in inflation turned out to be misleading, leaving the US to grapple with elevated prices for over a decade. JPMorgan's chief market strategist, Marko Kolanovic, expressed the view that there is a risk of shifting away from a Goldilocks narrative and towards a scenario resembling the stagflation of the 1970s, which would have significant implications for asset allocation. In fact, he predicts that the S&P 500 will decline to 4,200 by the end of the year.
