Leveraging one of the world’s oldest biological experiments, which began in 1929, researchers in Science have uncovered how a major crop, barley, was shaped by both agricultural pressures and its changing natural environment. Learn more: scim.ag/7IG

I am very happy to announce the recent publication of a beautiful theory paper with @mscott0106 and Karl Mackintosh (not on X) on the interactions between mating system evolution and haploid gametic selection in @PLOSGenetics doi.org/10.1371/journa…

There’s an interesting bit of insect ecology on display at the moment. I’m sure you remember the massive acorn crop last year (autumn 2022, below). Because Quercus robur is alternate-bearing (big crops are always followed by little crops) we predicted a very low crop this year

Working with multiple collaborators we cloned the Rht13 alternative dwarfing gene. Buckle-up- it's not what we expected... Unlike other wheat dwarfing genes it isn't a gibberellin signalling/metabolic gene- it's an autoactive NB-LRR! Pre-print available: doi.org/10.1101/2022.0…

"Arabidopsis thaliana flower with pollen tubes growing through the pistil. The flower tissues were chemically cleared to become transparent, while the pollen tubes were stained with aniline blue (yellow fluorescence) in order to be seen."
