“If it wasn’t for Central High School’s art program, I would’ve never thought about being an artist.” These are the words of Central High senior Kingston S. In a recent sit-down interview, Kingston talked about his passion for art and how educators have helped him believe in his ability to pursue it as a career. While he’s had the opportunity to showcase his work throughout the halls of his school, he’s also participated in Contemporary Arts Memphis, a program that supports high school students interested in visual arts as a pathway to future educational and professional opportunities. Kingston’s most recent piece reflects an individual searching for peace in a world filled with chaos, while subtly weaving in elements of faith.

As a member of Jackson State’s Sonic Boom of the South, there’s something special about being named one of five drum majors in the historic J5. This upcoming school year, one of MSCS’ own, Jaylen Jarrell Kelly (Freshman), a graduate of Whitehaven High School, will carry the drum major mace alongside four others as they lead the prestigious band through the 2026-27 school year. In Jaylen’s own words, “This is what I’m passionate about.” Moments like this show what can happen when you stay focused and put in the work. Let’s congratulate Jaylen on this great accomplishment! #GreatnessGrowsHere

Literacy matters and that was made evident today when Lidz and Champions for Literacy teamed up to donate $5,000 to students at Sea Isle Elementary to help upgrade their library with new books, including braille titles. In addition to the check presentation, students received a special treat when a University of Memphis football player stopped by to read to them. Partnerships like these continue to shine a light on the importance of literacy while also ensuring that our students have the resources they need to succeed.

At Idlewild Elementary School, creativity is part of the daily rhythm. From vibrant hallway displays to musical performances and hands-on visual art projects, students encounter the arts throughout the school day and in every classroom. That culture recently earned the school statewide recognition as a Tennessee Arts Academy 2026 Arts Rich School of Merit, honoring schools that provide exceptional access to arts education. For visual and performing arts teacher and Orff music specialist, Allen Moody, the recognition reflects something students and families notice as soon as they walk through the building. “When you walk through our hallways, you’re immediately encapsulated in a wonderful art exhibit,” he said. “It's just such an arts-rich environment. When I think arts rich, I really do think Idlewild.”
