Halloween #thinkingclassroom Math Fun at @TayShoresPS 🎃👻 Ms. Watson was a Math Dart Board and (in groups of 3) students threw 1 ball each. Then, groups would write the number sentence for each group! When everyone finished, groups added the totals! @scdsbmath @pgliljedahl

We are loving our #thinkingclassrooms in Grade 3! It helps us generate great math conversations, learn how to share our thinking, and practice listening to one another. Today we were “playing darts” to make combinations of 3 digit number sentences 🤩

Learning how to play Horse Race by #boxcarandoneeyedjack! Students roll 3 dice and whomever has the highest sum gets to fill their side in! The students loved it and even played during our earned Fun Friday! #mathgames #deliberatepractice @scdsbmath

Today I practiced sharing our TC task verbally. I picked a short/sweet, but challenging task! I also practiced NOT answering proximity or stop-thinking-questions, which was HARD! But, it was interesting to watch the students push through the struggle by THINKING!! @scdsbmath

@bwood233 I have the original. So they are thin, but super easy to hang because they are very light. I taped up the edges with an electrical tape to strengthen them and used tape across the top to hang/stick them to my walls.

@mskwats We are getting the heavy duty ones… are they the ones you have? How do you hang them on the walls?

Tuesdays we do 3-part math lessons. But today, during our “action”, students asked “can we use thinking boards with a friend to solve the question?” Within minutes, the whole class had started their own #thinkingclassroom! After our consolidation, students did an exit ticket.

@bwood233 Yes! I’ve been using them for about a month and LOVE them. They wipe off amazingly and are very lightweight. But I have heard that they tear easily… Taping the edges may help!

@mskwats Are these whipebooks? We are about to get a set for a math classroom!!

@scdsbmath I’ve been trying to encourage knowledge mobility by asking students to “take a step back” when they are stuck, which means step back and look at other groups strategies. Also, when we consolidate, I often model their thinking on a hundreds chart and by drawing Base 10!

Great to see the mental math making friendly numbers. What manipulatives or drawings might be helpful? How could students learn from each other by visiting the other groups work?

Day 8 of having our Chick Eggs!!! Today we Candled our eggs to see which eggs had veins in them! “What’s that black spot?” “Those look like my grandma’s veins!” “Do all animals have veins?” “Do we form our veins that early?” So many incredible inquiry questions!

I’ve been implementing the first 4 practices since January. Today I finally added practices 5 & 6, and it went so smoothly I asked myself “why did you wait so long??” #mathgrowth #challengeyourself
