I thought we were making one quick stop on the way home. Mary told me we needed to stop in Salina to pick up a laptop from one of her coworkers so it could be turned back in to her work. Then she said I needed to walk inside because the coworker’s husband had some old KHP memorabilia he wanted to give me. That part made sense. After 26 years with the Kansas Highway Patrol, people will occasionally pass along patches, photos, coins, or old items connected to the Patrol. So I walked in thinking I was about to say hello, look at a few KHP items, and get back on the road. But as soon as I walked through the door, a lady greeted me and handed me my Father’s Day gift. A gift Mary had been planning for more than five weeks. A tiny French Bulldog puppy. 🤯😱😃 My brain couldn’t even catch up with what was happening! If you’ve followed me for a while, you already know there was only ONE NAME I had ever picked out if I got a dog. CHINO! I always thought Chino would be a Chihuahua, but Mary had gently pushed the idea of a Frenchie. I just stood there looking at him, saying the same thing over and over… “Oh my God.” Meet Chino. 🐾 Best Father’s Day surprise ever. ❤️

I'm not using AI like a chatbot anymore. Most people treat AI like a search box: ask, copy, paste, lose the context. Useful—but the least interesting version of what this can be. The real shift is when AI stops being a place you visit and becomes a layer across your work—memory, tools, scheduled research, and repeated workflows turned into skills. That's what I've been building in my home lab with two small Mac systems, Frank (@openclaw) and Henry (@NousResearch Hermes). Henry is my thinking partner. Frank orchestrates—preserving context, drafting, and running research while I sleep. The lesson: the model isn't the system. The workflow around the model is. Most knowledge work doesn't fail from lack of smarts. It fails because context leaks—the meeting happened, but the follow-up died. The chatbot was the doorway. We were talking to a neighboring Kansas district this morning with Dyane Smokorowski and Katelyn Schoenhofer about our Ai work that we have done. And something kept coming up in my mind: It's Not Where You Are. It's How Fast You're Moving. There's a quiet trap that catches schools, leaders, and entire systems off guard: we measure ourselves by what we can do today instead of how quickly we're becoming something new tomorrow. In a world where AI models are leaping forward every few months and student expectations are shifting in real time, current capability is a snapshot — already outdated by the time we celebrate it. Rate of change is the real signal. Think about it. A district with cutting-edge tools and a stagnant culture will be lapped by the district that started behind but is doubling its learning velocity every quarter. The same is true for educators, for students, for all of us. The question isn't "How capable am I right now?" The question is "How much more capable will I be six months from now than I am today?" This is why I keep pushing our teams at Wichita Public Schools to treat learning as the core deliverable — not the technology, not the dashboards, not the polished plan. The infrastructure matters only insofar as it accelerates how fast our people grow. Three reminders I'm sitting with this week: Capability is a lagging indicator. Curiosity, reflection, and willingness to be a beginner again — those are leading ones. Comfort compounds slowly. Reps compound fast. The leaders and learners who win the next decade will be the ones who shorten the gap between trying and trying again. Don't benchmark against your peers' current state. Benchmark against your own slope. If you're early, that's fine. If you're behind, that's fine too. Just make sure the line is going up — and going up faster than it was last year. Because in education, in leadership, and in life: the rate of change is the strategy.
