A bunch of policy memos for the incoming administration have been published by @BulletinAtomic --- I had the opportunity to write one of them on sensible policies for AI. Most of us who actually work in ML, CV, NLP etc. have been rolling our eyes as the conversations around AI risk keep reverting back to familiar tropes from science fiction that are irrelevant. A serious conversation on where all of this is going is warranted. One idea that I think is a good one: the establishment of a President’s Council on AI that would take a multidisciplinary approach (ideally untainted by corporate interest) to assessing the pros and cons of emerging technologies could aid the federal government in better guiding Americans into a future in which society and AI thrive. I am deeply humbled to have been awarded the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) by President Biden. This is the highest recognition by the U.S. government to scientists and engineers. There's an interesting paradox in academia where students put in tremendous effort, yet professors get all the credit. This honor truly belongs to my students and research collaborators, who have been both teachers and learners alongside me throughout our journey together. My late mother, who passed away at 48, taught me the straightforward formula for success - maintain your presence and never surrender.
