AU: He doesn't understand why they're pulling him away. Doesn't understand why they're unhooking her wires and tubes. She was tired yesterday but she was ALIVE. "She's still warm," he sobs like a child, gripping onto Scully's frail little body, "Please, don't; she's still warm."

He's making eggs for breakfast. She comes up behind him, wrapping her arms tightly around his waist and pressing a kiss between his shoulder blades. "You okay?" She nods her head against his back, her nose still buried in his shirt. "I'm so happy it scares me," she whispers.

He awakens with a start, heart thudding, unaware of what brought him to consciousness. She is curled against him in a perfect parenthesis, the soft puff of her steady breath like kisses in the dip of his clavicle. His eyes fall closed and her warmth lulls him back into sleep.

@msrafterdark The one that got me was the 7 days in Denver I think where Mulder goes missing for years and Skinner marries Scully and raises William as his own and then Mulder comes back and he is in a relationship with someone else and at the end Mulder dies and I was like WTF.

Ages before I began writing MSR I read a fic on Gossamer that was a brutally honest if depressing portrayal of M & S having sex and it's awful, and they're so disappointed they never do it again. I can't remember the author nor title, but YEARS later it haunts me to this day.

@msrafterdark I've read a couple of those! I can handle it if there's a second chance follow up chapter where it's all good. But if they give up because the first time was awful? No. That's not for me.
