Illinois State is believed to be the first school ever to qualify for the Semifinals in a D1 postseason tournament in Football, MBB, and WBB in the same academic year. They lost an overtime heartbreaker in the FCS Final, and are headed to the NIT Semifinal and WNIT Fab Four.

Leaving Valpo is not easy… and I don’t think it’s supposed to be. Valparaiso is one of those places you truly have to experience to understand. There’s an essence to it, a pride, a toughness, a connection, that can’t fully be explained unless you’ve lived it every day. It’s in the locker room, in the relationships, in the battles, and in the moments that stay with you long after the final buzzer. I’m incredibly grateful for the way this place embraced me from day one. The people here, Roger “The Rev” Powell, players, staff, administration, and community make Valpo special. And what makes this bittersweet is simple: we shared something real. We built relationships, created extraordinary memories, and went through moments together that I’ll carry with me for life. This next chapter is an opportunity to grow and build alongside someone I’ve known for a long time, someone I’ve coached and watched develop into the man and leader he is today. That makes this move meaningful in a different way, but it doesn’t make leaving any easier. Valpo, thank you for welcoming me with open arms. The love is real, and it’s forever reciprocated. May God Bless You and Keep You! Love you Valpo!

Tariq is a program / Culture changer - when he steps into a building he impacts PEOPLE on a level far greater than basketball. We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Roger Powell Sr., one of the most iconic athletes in Joliet Central High School history. His loss is felt across our community, where his impact and legacy remain unmatched. Roger starred at Joliet Central from 1968–1972, wearing the number 43, and cemented himself as one of the greatest Steelmen ever. He set the school career scoring record with 2,200 points and helped lead the Steelmen to a third‑place finish at the 1970 State Tournament, averaging 33 points per game that season. He scored 90 points in 4 games at the state finals. After his legendary high school career, Roger continued his excellence at Illinois State University, becoming one of the Redbirds’ all‑time leading scorers with 1,306 points across four varsity seasons. He was later inducted into the Illinois State Percy Family Hall of Fame for his outstanding collegiate career. The Joliet Central family extends our heartfelt thoughts to his loved ones during this time.
