@landlord_secret This is the other issue - you are ‘effectively’ tied in (yes you can export data… but it’s a pain) when I moved to MTD for VAT I ended up recording everything twice - once in quick books for submission and again in my own system… more admin work and paying to submit

Making Tax Digital is Making Tax Difficult - it's a nightmare for landlords. Plus HMRC’s new system will be more complicated and expensive – and the timing couldn’t be worse telegraph.co.uk/money/property…

@Marsmite @AcademicAgent_X Untrue. On the client side you need to structure your data to fully meet the standard, as a single file. If you use excel for your accounts, that's fine but you'd still have to fudge it around to transfer required structure. HMRC don't want you doing that and with good reason.

I'm absolutely appalled by the fact that HMRC now requires COMMERCIAL software to fill out tax self-assessment. What's wrong with Excel? Or how about offer it from the Government website? What a disgusting decision by the government. So angry.

Mass immigration and the ethnographic transformation of Britain is one factor in why Lionel Shriver fled to Portugal. But the final straw was HMRC's maddening new requirement to file tax returns five times a year. dailysceptic.org/2026/03/01/why…

This making tax digital.. Has its complications. Because income via Apps/credit cards are put into your account As net..but HMRC want gross. I suppose it will all work out,in the end.. But quarterly’s need to match end of year.

@BlowLane41453 I’ll have to see what the MTD software allows.. Otherwise it’s going through the accountant and paying increased fees

@LeilaniDowding This is going to be a nightmare for small self employed businesses and it will cost them a lot in software or accountants. Not to mention the time they will have to spend on this instead of out working. The government is always shitting on the small businesses.

This will be fun.. 10 tax returns a year. Income not profit! sole traders & landlords (individuals on Self Assessment) with >£50k qualifying income from April 2026. They'll submit 4 quarterly digital updates (income/expenses) + 1 year-end declaration = 5 filings/year minimum. If both self-employed AND landlord: separate updates per business = 8 quarterly + declaration(s), so 9-10+ total. Threshold drops to £30k in 2027. gov.uk/government/new…

@LeilaniDowding Lots in the comments saying this benefits accountants. I don't think so... Accountants are about to be replaced by AI. It was already happening with $INTU now look at INTU SP - AI is eroding INTU now and SaaS. AI will do everyone's accounts before long is my guess.

@LeilaniDowding Ten tax returns a year sounds like a full-time job nobody signed up for Maybe the real business is building software to handle all this nonsense Until then, brace yourself for the paperwork marathon

@Jenniferarcuri @LeilaniDowding For small sole traders like plumbers etc it is awful. As if they do not want them in business. Some consultants say forming Ltd company so using existing corporation tax framework is way to go. Some will retire or get job.

@BInvestHQ @LeilaniDowding It’s honestly not as bad as it’s being made out to be. You can keep your figures in a spreadsheet and the quarterly submissions are just a basic snapshot of totals. It actually makes the year end easier than a self assessment. mtd.tax

@LeilaniDowding I will be keeping taxable income below these thresholds. Unless #HMRC put in place the software I will not be taking part and rather scale down my business then get dragged into Making Tax Digital.

@GBNEWS Only self employed and landlords. I recommend comcsi (google then) who will provide a bridge to IR for a sensible price if you get your data onto a formatted spreadsheet. But what of the complete return inc PAYE and pensions .. is HMRC ready?

@lowercase00 @GBNEWS With MTD you can! Quarterly updates are the requirement, but with our spreadsheet bridging software you can submit an update as often as you like and get a fresh tax calculation.
