The Lord of the Rings: The Shadow of the Past is NOT a sequel to the trilogy. That is outrage bait misinformation that is going out of control right now.
The scenes set 14 years after Return of the King are the framing device for the flashback, just like Bilbo preparing for his party was the framing device for the flashback to the events of The Hobbit sixty years earlier.
In the announcement video they literally say it’s based on six chapters from Fellowship of the Ring that deal with the Old Forest, Old Man Willow, and the Barrow-Downs.
