New paper from @bansallab team on global landscape of smallpox susceptibility has some of the coolest geospatial layers and demographic analyses that I've seen in infectious disease work thelancet.com/journals/lanin…

Monkeypox spread will be shaped by the global landscape of immunity left by past smallpox vaccinations. But this landscape hadn’t ever been mapped, until now. Check out our preprint, by @julianactaube and @mtevarest, led by old friend and new collaborator @bansallab. Her thread:
Shweta Bansal@bansallab

The ongoing monkeypox outbreak has brought to the forefront the legacy of smallpox eradication. Historical smallpox vaccination efforts were heterogenous leaving a modern patchwork of long-lasting protection. We characterize this landscape in new work: doi.org/10.1101/2022.0…. 🧵

Amidst the ongoing monkeypox outbreak, we investigate the global landscape of orthopoxvirus susceptibility and the varying legacy of smallpox vaccination. Many thanks to @bansallab and @julianactaube. Check out our preprint and a great thread on our work:

Public health is political. Gun violence is a public health crisis. We must keep pushing for change. Especially when it's difficult, keep trying. Call your senator at 202-224-3121.

@luketomasovic11 Agreed; I strongly support gap years, even if it sometimes seems like entering the great unknown. I learned and experienced so much in my gap years, personally and professionally, that made me stand out as an applicant and will make me a better physician-scientist.

We found notable heterogeneity in indoor activity at the U.S. county level, but there is still more to do. We commit to work to better understand the additional risks faced by marginalized communities, front-line workers, and folks lacking access to clean air and outdoor spaces.
Shweta Bansal@bansallab

We construct a novel metric for the propensity for human mixing to be indoor at a fine scale across the US, using anonymized phone GPS data of visits to ~5 million public locations by 45+ million mobile devices. Values > 1 suggest visits are more frequently indoor than avg. (4/)

I'm proud to have worked on this study with @bansallab and @ZacharySusswein. COVID-19 underscores the importance of indoor contacts and airborne disease transmission risk, as well as the need to better understand patterns of indoor activity. Check out the thread for more info!
Shweta Bansal@bansallab

The pandemic has highlighted the increased risk of airborne transmission risk in INDOOR environments w/out ventilation. But it turns out we know very little about rates of indoor activity and how this varies by location. A 🧵on a new study in which we start to fill this gap (1/)

The race against #AntibioticResistance depends on us! Rapid diagnostics and informed care are crucial; we can't take antibiotics for granted. We discuss using data and diagnostics to combat #AMR now and in the future.

It's not all about COVID-19! Other pathogens continue to emerge. Check out this take on solutions to clinical #antimicrobialresistance in the latest GLID student blog by @mtevarest, Grant Rosensteel, Emily Shambaugh, and @emmakoren21 bit.ly/2MTX3Dd @JesseGoodmanMD
