Earlier today, I had the privilege of meeting two remarkable young gentlemen. Both are secondary school students and already CEOs of their own startups—one in EdTech and the other in Agritech. What made this encounter even more special was the young man in the black t-shirt. He’s a student at Azania Secondary School, fondly referred to as an AzaBoy. As he shared his journey, I discovered that he had honed his coding skills in the same computer lab where, 21 years ago, I wrote my first MS-DOS commands. It felt like a full-circle moment, as his story mirrored so much of my own early experiences. Deeply inspired by his determination and potential, I immediately pledged to mentor him—provided his parents approve. This encounter reaffirmed my belief in the importance of investing in digital infrastructure for public schools, even if it means starting with refurbished computers. A heartfelt salute to the @CamaraEducation Foundation for their outstanding work in making this possible. You are truly making a difference.

But here’s a hard truth – the world is changing and doesn’t just need straight-A students. It needs problem-solvers, creators, and thinkers! Today’s job market is looking for skills like critical thinking, creativity, adaptability, and collaboration – not just the ability to memorise facts for exams. Let’s be real; many private schools are churning out “cramming experts.” Kids are taught to memorise just enough to pass exams, then forget everything by next semester! We’re creating “certified parrots,” not innovators. Our education system trains kids to be grade chasers, not game changers. As one teacher joked, “Our kids are great at remembering but terrible at applying.” The world isn’t looking for walking encyclopedias; it’s looking for minds that can think independently.
