John’s screenplay for Daniel Boone is one of the best scripts I’ve ever read. Then there’s his fantastic unproduced Curtis LeMay screenplay (languishing in turnaround). Then there’s his powerful unproduced Genghis Khan screenplay (don’t get me started on that one). The list of brilliant unproduced Milius scripts goes on and on. Some of the greatest screenwriting ever done, written by this one man who no one would deny is one of the best writers of all time, is sitting in drawers unmade by vastly lesser men who control the rights.

Tom Brady reveals the overlooked reason practice squad players never succeed in the NFL It’s not a lack of talent. Brady watched it happen for 20 years. The pattern was undeniable. As soon as a practice squad player got promoted and had to perform under real pressure, they crumbled. It took years for Brady to understand why. “There’s 53 guys on the active roster and there’s now 15 guys on the practice squad. So there’s 68 players. But those practice squad players are important because if anybody on the active roster gets hurt, they can get elevated to the squad.” “These scout team receivers would come in and practice with the scout team and they do really well. And I’d be watching. I’m like, ‘Man, we got to get that guy. Let’s get him up on offense. He’s making a lot of plays.’” “Then all of a sudden, we’re like, ‘Hey man, you’re doing really well. You got to come over here and deal with the pressure of succeeding now that you have expectation.’” “And these guys are like, they weren’t prepared for it. So whatever we saw in practice against where there was not a lot of pressure, now when they’re put in a situation where there’s an expectation for performance, they’ve never had to personally deal with that and then they fail.” “And then what I realized was a lot of guys on those practice squads, they don’t want to be elevated to the roster.” “They’re very happy living this life where they could tell their family and friends, which I have no problem with that. But the reality is a lot of guys don’t want the pressure of dealing with top.” Twenty years in the league and seven Super Bowl rings later, Brady learned that talent wasn’t the hardest thing to find. It was people who actually wanted the pressure that comes with being great.

Some of the studios must be looking at their release schedules and sweating the way the old Hollywood moguls did when they realized the kids wanted to see Easy Rider and Butch & Sundance, not Dr. Doolittle or Hello, Dolly!

Juan López García is 82. At 66, he couldn't finish a mile. Today his VO2 max beats 70% of 20-year-olds. He holds the world 50K record for ages 80-84. Here's what scientists found and how he does it:

I cannot lie, running with a BMI of ~21 is much more enjoyable than running with a BMI of 24. If you have a few extra lbs to lose, would recommend.

Most athletes are in awful metabolic shape... And they don't know it. Then they skimp on the low zones because they're "time-crunched" and go straight to intensity. All that does? Reinforce the limiter. Want to really improve over long time horizons? Build the aerobic base first. Earn the higher zones.

The Millennials were tricked into a life of “You’re Digital Natives! There’s an app for that! You can be your own boss in the gig economy! Live for the moment! Families and saving for the future is for suckers! Trust tech, we do good!” The next gen sees that it’s all a load of shit. The real is the only real.

@JustineBateman I work on a University campus. I'm not an Academic, just the "Facilities Guy" but we employ a lot of students and I hear and observe things. The kids want genuine. All the trends of the kids under 25 are fantastic and messaging like yours has led the way.

@JosephKahn It kinda made sense for the ending, I hated it, but some stories deserve an end. And for 21 big budget movies to end in one climax is truly something amazing, that I was glad to have experienced as a film lover.

Something not appreciated enough… Easy aerobic training isn’t just physical... It’s "relax and recover" nervous system training. Without it, both body and mind lack balance. Build more “calm” into your system → you don't just get better performance, you get a better life! 🌲🚶
brian mackenzie@brianmackenzie

The aerobically limited athlete will be state dependent on chasing the burn (pH)/glycogen/>SNS/hormones. They will be psychologically tied to an identity that isn’t doing enough. Their nervous system will literally protect and chase this state.

Put another way... An elite cyclist/triathlete with a well-developed base can ride at 200W and fuel almost all of the energy from fat 🔥, leaving their precious glycogen stores untouched & ready for hard training. OTOH, many recreational amateurs will be burning through 600kcal of glycogen per hour at this level! Significantly decreasing their capacity for the harder training. Build that #base first!

My most reactionary opinion about Star Trek is that it's bullshit that they stopped shooting the movies and shows on the Paramount lot. And if your alien planet doesn't look like Vasquez Rocks or a water treatment plant in Van Nuys, I don't want it.

Most people think aging = decline. This study says otherwise. 👀 Over 4 years, researchers tracked older adults and found a powerful pattern: • Yes, muscle and quality of life tend to decline with age • But people who improved strength, muscle mass, or mobility saw real gains in how they felt • Better physical performance had the strongest impact on quality of life • Stronger grip and higher muscle mass also made a measurable difference • Improvements showed up across multiple areas of daily living 333 older adults, tracked annually using a sarcopenia-specific quality of life tool (SarQoL) Aging is not just a slow decline. It is a process you can actively shape. Even small gains in strength and movement can translate into a better life. The body changes with age. But how well you live in it is still in your hands.

I always thought "Call of Cthulhu" would work best as an adaptation if you treat it as the L.A. Confidential of horror--where individual characters slowly realize they're investigating the same mystery, and that each of them has a different piece of the same horrifying puzzle.
