It is not only that Soviet socialism historically inspired and enabled major accomplishments, revolutions, and progressive reforms worldwide. More important is that the legacy of the Soviet revolution is being reassessed positively today — both in the former USSR and beyond. The debate about the Soviet Union was never just about its sustainability, effectiveness, progressiveness, or repressiveness as such. It always implied a comparison with capitalism — the system it sought to supplant. As perceptions of the Soviet project shifted across decades, with the “winner” of the comparison alternating from one period to another, so too did the relative standing of capitalism as its rival. Amid today’s escalating crisis, it is unsurprising that we return to evaluate the most profound alternative. This is not merely a matter of history; it has direct implications for left politics in the present.
