I attended the 2026 Paris International Agricultural Show (PIAS) as part of a high-level Kano State Government delegation where we presented our Sustainable Agricultural Intensification Model for Kano State, delivered by Mubarak Mahmud, in line with His Excellency Gov. Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration’s commitment to advancing sustainable agriculture and improving productivity without expanding farmland through a scalable 1,000-hectare pilot programme. Beyond the exhibition, I was particularly impressed by how the ancient city of Paris has preserved its green areas despite centuries of urban growth. It reflects our own ongoing efforts in Kano State to restore degraded landscapes and expand urban greenery in order to create oxygen banks and carbon sinks that support community health and climate resilience. On the sidelines of the event, I also had the privilege of meeting a 2007 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate on behalf of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) where we discussed global climate financing and the importance of strengthening access for subnational governments to support climate-resilient agricultural systems. 𝐊𝐚𝐧𝐨 𝐑𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝟑𝟓𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐨 𝟒𝐭𝐡 𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐍𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚’𝐬 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐆𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐑𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 I am deeply proud to share that Kano State has recorded one of the most remarkable transformations in Nigeria’s climate governance history — moving from 35th position in the previous year’s Subnational Climate Governance Performance Ranking to 4th position in the 2025 edition. This milestone reflects the visionary leadership of His Excellency, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, whose commitment to sustainability has placed climate action at the center of our state’s development agenda. Through deliberate reforms, strengthened institutions, and community-driven programs, we have built a governance system that responds to both the global urgency of climate change and the local realities of our people. In the past year, we have expanded climate-smart infrastructure and deepened environmental governance through the implementation of the Kano State Climate Change Policy, renewable energy deployment across public institutions, the greening of our urban spaces under the Urban Renewal Project, and the continuation of large-scale afforestation and erosion control efforts across the state. These initiatives have laid the foundation for resilience, cleaner energy transition, and inclusive growth. This recognition is a testament to the collective efforts of our dedicated teams, local governments, community leaders, civil society, and partners who have worked with us to strengthen climate action in Kano. I express our sincere appreciation to the Honourable Minister of Environment, Mallam Balarabe Abbas Lawal, the Federal Ministry of Environment, and the Department of Climate Change for their steadfast leadership in advancing subnational climate governance. I also commend the Society for Planet and Prosperity (SPP) and the University of Bristol, United Kingdom, for spearheading this national ranking initiative that continues to inspire healthy competition, collaboration, and accountability across all states. Our gratitude equally goes to the UK-FCDO Partnership for Agile Governance and Climate Engagement (PACE) Project and other development partners for their continued technical and institutional support to Kano’s environmental transformation journey. This achievement belongs to the Government and people of Kano State. Together, we will continue to strengthen our resolve to build a cleaner, greener, and more climate-resilient future for our state and for Nigeria. Dr. Dahir M. I had the privilege of hosting my boss and good friend, the Honourable Commissioner for @kanoenvironment, @DahirMHashim, at our youth-friendly space, @OuttsideLab. He commended our efforts in creating a platform that empowers young people to build a better Kano and Nigeria.

Our ongoing eight‑week sensitization campaign on the Kano State Environmental Pollution Control Law 2022 and the Kano State Pollution and Waste Control Regulations 2025 is progressing steadily. In the opening weeks, we secured a warm endorsement from the Head of Service, who has pledged the full support of the State Civil Service in championing compliance across all ministries and agencies. We have also held a productive meeting with the Honourable Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, during which we presented the key provisions of both the 2022 Law and the 2025 Regulations. His commitment to personally introduce these instruments to all forty‑four Local Government Chairmen, as well as to our First‑ and Second‑Class Emirs and their district heads, marks a crucial milestone in our drive for comprehensive, grassroots engagement. In line with our commitment to effective enforcement, we are also working closely with the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice to establish a mobile court system. This collaboration will support the swift adjudication of environmental offences, reinforcing our legal framework and ensuring that violators are held accountable in a timely and transparent manner. Over the coming weeks, we will extend our outreach to traditional rulers, enforcement agencies, community associations, market leaders, civil‑society organizations, media houses, educators, and youth groups. By engaging every relevant stakeholder, we aim to ensure that the responsibilities and benefits enshrined in this legislation are fully understood and embraced across Kano State. Together, we will transform legal frameworks into lasting environmental protection and public‑health gains for our people. Dr. Dahir M.
