@ruth_wishart I’m so sorry to hear about your mum, however I’ll rely on good palliative care which will be overseen by my daughter and her husband who are both wonderful Drs for our excellent SNHS. Plus I’ll pray that my faith will sustain me.

So the Scottish parliament voted down the lastest attempt at an assisted dying bill. And denied terminally ill Scots the rights enjoyed by 300 million souls world wide. But it's "coming yet for a' that". Let's believe that and work towards it.

We are taught to view this as him being dismissive, emotionally unintelligent, or invalidating our feelings. ​The strict, unpopular truth is that to a man, fixing the problem is his absolute highest, most desperate form of empathy. ​Women vent to connect; we want our partner to just sit in the dark with us and validate the emotion. But men are hardwired to view the woman they love being in distress as an active threat. When he immediately offers a spreadsheet, a strategy, or a solution to your problem, he isn't trying to silence you. His brain has recognized that something in the world is hurting his partner, and his immediate, visceral instinct is to assassinate the thing causing you pain. We constantly shame men for "not just listening," completely ignoring the fact that his attempt to fix your life is his most profound declaration of love.

@HumzaYousaf I respectfully disagree. There will be many people in profound distress tonight feeling utterly hopeless and condemned to living the last part of their lives in despair.

No jubilation or victory rhetoric, just quiet relief as the Assisted Dying Bill is rejected by Parliament. We could not afford to pass a Bill that the most vulnerable told us they feared would open the door to coercion - regardless of how subtle it may be - to end their lives.
