Tomorrow serves as a reminder that something infinitesimally small exerts a profound influence on our lives: DNA 🧬
Though invisible to the naked eye, DNA is continuously at work—governing how plants develop, how crops respond to environmental stressors, and how we can enhance the food systems we depend on. From the moment a seed is sown to the eventual harvest, DNA underpins the entire agricultural journey.
In modern agriculture, advances in DNA science are enabling a shift from uncertainty to precision. Rather than waiting through multiple growing seasons to observe change, scientists can now accelerate the development of superior crop varieties—ones that are more resilient, higher-yielding, and better adapted to challenges such as pests, diseases, and climate variability.
As Rwanda joins the global community in commemorating DNA Week 2026, this moment offers an opportunity to bring science closer to society, highlighting the transformative role of biotechnology across agriculture, environmental sustainability, and innovation.
This week invites us to explore how DNA shapes the crops we cultivate, the food we consume, and the solutions we must develop for the future. Through expert seminars, public lectures, and open discussions, it creates a platform to deepen understanding, engage with scientific ideas, and witness the tangible impact of biotechnology.

MULCH CHOICES THAT CHANGE YOUR SOIL
1️⃣ Wood chips improve moisture retention and feed soil life
2️⃣ Straw offers balanced moisture with neutral soil impact
3️⃣ Black plastic traps moisture but damages soil biology
4️⃣ Shredded leaves enrich soil and support microbes
5️⃣ Gravel and stone provide drainage but no soil benefits
6️⃣ Choose organic mulch to build healthy, living soil
7️⃣ Match mulch type to plant needs and garden goals
8️⃣ Avoid materials that block air, water, and soil activity
9️⃣ Refresh mulch regularly to maintain effectiveness
Mulch shapes soil health, plant growth, and long-term productivity.

BEE PRODUCTION (SUMMARY 🐝)
Beekeeping is a low-cost, profitable activity that requires little land and improves crop pollination. Success depends on proper hive management, good location, and understanding bee behavior.
A bee colony has a queen (lays eggs), workers (produce honey), and drones (reproduction).
Use suitable hives:
•Traditional (low yield)
•Kenya Top Bar (moderate)
•Langstroth (high yield)
Place hives in a quiet area with flowers, water, shade, and no pesticides.
Manage hives by:
•Inspecting every 1–2 weeks
•Controlling pests (ants, wax moth, beetles)
•Feeding only during scarcity
Harvest honey only when combs are sealed, using protective gear and proper methods.
Store honey in clean, dry containers.
Key benefits: income, pollination, low investment
Key rule: care for your bees well, and they will produce consistently.
