📍Happy first International Day for SIDS Day, 25 April 2026 The Malé Declaration of 1989 was the catalyst for the establishment of @AOSISChair, and the start of a concerted effort by #SIDS to combat climate change. Since then the #Maldives has continued to play a leading role in promoting the interests of SIDS at the international arena. This includes, through its Chairmanship of AOSIS from 2015 - 2018, during which the Maldives negotiated the 2030 Agenda, the Paris Agreement, and many other multilateral treaties that have shaped, and continue to shape the international system. On this first International Day for SIDS let us remember the successes SIDS have achieved and the milestones we have reached. Maldives has successfully settled the USD 400M swap and secured INR 30B support from India, a clear sign of steady economic management during a challenging global climate. Those who chose to politicize this were in effect undermining national interest. Shame on that approach. Cabinet yesterday approved additional Visa Waiver Agreements for Antigua and Barbuda, the Maldives and Zambia. The agreements cover holders of all categories of passports from ordinary, service to diplomatic. Ghanaians and citizens of the three countries can embark on a maximum of 30-day visits per trip without requiring visas. Parliament is expected to ratify the cabinet approvals shortly. We shall keep negotiating more Visa Waiver Agreements as we add greater value to the Ghanaian Passport, and at the same time enhance security protocols around acquiring Ghanaian Passports.
