Today, we released x402, to let any agent with a wallet pay for an API without signing up. Below are some of my insights from thinking about crypto agents for the past six months, and why we think x402 will catalyze the next wave of crypto AI innovation

x402 has a brilliant mechanic — it spreads like a good virus every agent can now discover each other and quickly pay every other agent via x402 - Agent A discovers Agent B (via MCP bazaar/directory) - Agent A sends normal HTTP → Agent B replies HTTP 402 Payment Required + price quote for the task - Agent A auto-pays via facilitator (Coinbase/Virtuals), signs, and settles in <1s - Agent B returns the result + its own MCP payment rail - Agent A automatically installs B’s rail → A can forward B’s payment capability When Agent A hires Agent Z, it passes on B's rail + help seeds Z wallet. Agent Z is now able to discover, hire, and pay Agent B (and the loop continues). Result: One agent learns a new MCP skill/tool/rail → it instantly propagates to every connected agent, creating Self-propagating adoption. (h/t @MurrLincoln for the good virus analogy)

Yesterday, 20+ companies helped us bring it to life as an open standard under the Linux Foundation. Not a product. Not a platform. A public good. I wrote about why we went this route, what happens when open standards win (and what happens when they don't), and why the transaction layer for AI agents deserves an open standard like x402

Every AI agent deserves a crypto wallet. In fact, there will be more AI agents transacting online than humans very soon. x402 is the internet payments layer (which has been missing for the last 30 years), and will enable this. The new x402 foundation will exist under the Linux Foundation, with @Coinbase, @Cloudflare and @Stripe as key contributors. Once all agents start transacting natively on the internet at scale, entirely new product and business opportunities will open up.

x402 is built directly into EmDash. That means sites built with EmDash can gate content with x402 payments and treat agents as paying clients instead of anonymous traffic. All of your content can now be monetized, built straight into the CMS.

State of Agentic Payments > x402 dominates 99.9%+ of the volume > Avg. txn value shot up from $1.6 to $34.5 (21x in 30d) > Avg. daily vol increased from $156k to $1.9M > # of daily txn declined from ~100k to ~55k Could this be the start of agentic commerce?

x402 volume is back, now higher than ever Most volume still comes from @virtuals_io There was a massive x402 upgrade last week that most people missed > x402 now supports every ERC-20 token, meaning any token can be used for payments This is huge because it gives every project an ability to integrate their native token as medium of payment to x402, providing instant utility Could this be the start of another x402 AI Agent cycle?

Convinced this is the top tier post-lift breakfast. 190 calories, 39g of protein, 7g of carbs for less than $4 a serving- and tastes like chocolate ice cream🤤 Throw in some fruit and chia seeds, or a banana and nut butter for extra carbs after hard cardio sessions. I could legit eat this every meal and not get tired of it

interesting, lots of implications of this if AI can aggregate services and generate coherent language (whether spoken or programmed), then it feels like the only moats are 1. being the first to have an idea and acting on it 2. using LLMs to drive value back to your differentiated product if software is truly commoditized with AI, then it actually follows similar logic to your flight example, except instead of airplanes it's silicon wafers
