How the outgoing MPs will spend their last week is reflective of how our Parly is, by turns, useless or harmful to Zambia. Last act is to rush through Bills, mostly dev in secret, whose fit for purpose they won't interrogate. What value do our MPs bring for money spent on them😪

The Judiciary is so underfunded. Some districts have only one Magistrate & a ramshackle of a court house. The accused are punished before conviction coz of how long cases take. What does gov do - table a law to build houses for retired Chief Justices. OK politicians delela us😮

The proposed bill giving former Vice Presidents, Justices etc, lifetime benefits is yet another example of Zambia's educated ruling elites' propensity for self-serving behavior. All of these people are paid full salaries while they serve. They aren't Monarchs, they are employees

Socialist Party and People's Pact Presidential candidate Fred M'membe yesterday announced that former ZCCM-IH CEO Dolika Banda will be his running mate in the August 2026 election. The move surprised many, but it is worth understanding and unpacking within a broader context: 🧵

Non-bailable offences I believe all cases should be bailable. This means that the decision whether or not to grant bail is in the discretion of the court looking at the circumstances of each case. Conditions of bail should also be in the discretion of the court. I also believe that there should be a statutory guideline guiding courts as to the appropriate cases in which to grant bail or not. Allowing all offenses to be potentially bailable eliminates the risk of falsely accused persons rotting in jail for a crime they didn't commit. We saw how the non-bailable offence of 'theft of motor vehicle' was weaponised against political opponents in the past. The same can happen with these new non-bailable offences. Making an offence bailable doesn't mean that you will automatically be granted bail. The Prosecution has to argue that, in the circumstances of the case, the accused should be locked up e.g. aggravating circumstances of the crime, the accused is a flight risk etc. I have long argued that making offenses non-bailable is in contravention of Article 18 of the Constitution, the right to a fair trial and to be considered innocent until proven guilty.

When Michael Sata won the 2011 election, he phoned Fred M'membe and told him he was due for a national honour at that year's Independence occasion. M'membe told him not to proceed with the honour, or he would embarass him by publicly rejecting it. I prefer not to speak on this.
