Mugabe gave his approval to the army commander, General Solomon Mujuru, to expand his personal business interests. An influential figure within the Zanu hierarchy, Mujuru had commanded the Zanla unit that opened the Rhodesian war in the northeast. In 1978 he had quelled an internal revolt aimed at toppling Mugabe, thus making him indispensable.
