After the 13 day debacle of Vajpayee in 1996 presidents and Governors insisted on letters. Remember in 1998 Jaya delayed the letter and Jaswanth Singh visited poes garden to get that letter.

I am not bothered whether AdMk wash out or BjP washout. But there is precedence. Manmohan in 2004 and Modi in 2024.
Also I am not imagining BJP will if the governor calls Vijay.

Governor has no right to tell a majority seat gaining party to share details of MLA before oath taking . Majority should proven on the floor - not at governors office ! Many judgements have stated the same ! Dirty tricks now in play.

Convention is to invite the party with largest numbers. PM Vajpayee didn’t have numbers when sworn-in as PM in May 1996- 30 yrs ago. He lost the confidence vote. The support is proven in the House. But we are in a New India, where governors await nod from above.

If no one claimed and party with 1-2 mla claims will the governor invite them. There are many precedents that even in case of pre-poll allies letters are asked. In 2004 Manmohan submitted all supporting MPs letters.

No one else has staked claim to form a Govt. In such a situation the Governor can appoint Vijay as CM and ask him to prove his majority on the floor of the house. That has happened in several States many times in the past. This looks like a delaying tactic.
