On architecture as the continuation of genocide by other means… lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v48/…

The nuclear file, may be more tractable than it appears, provided there is political will on both sides. In practice, Iran is not currently enriching, and the United States has already shown a degree of implicit recognition of Iran’s right to enrich under certain constraints. A workable compromise is therefore within reach. Washington would formally acknowledge Iran’s right to limited enrichment, while Tehran would agree to a time-bound freeze on enrichment activities as it rebuilds its nuclear infrastructure. This freeze would not extend for decades, but rather for a defined period of several years, during which enrichment levels and stockpiles would remain minimal and subject to intrusive monitoring. In parallel, Iran would dilute part of its existing enriched uranium stockpile, and in return receive meaningful sanctions relief. Such an arrangement would not require a fundamental breakthrough, only mutual recognition of constraints. The United States must accept that without acknowledging Iran’s right to enrich, no agreement will move forward. Iran, for its part, must recognize that such acknowledgment comes with temporary but real limitations on its program. This is not unprecedented. The backchannel talks between U.S. officials and Iranian representatives in Oman in 2012 lead to a breakthrough only when U.S recognized Iranian enrichment rights. The path forward is therefore less about technical barriers and more about political willingness to accept a narrow but viable middle ground. #IranWar
