@myaechtra There’s the story about the Elephants who visited the grave of their caretaker and the right day every year after he passed.

Book review with spoilers.
Is our world a distorted copy of a true one? Or even its inversion? Arcturus is ruled by a demon that uses pleasure to entice souls into his world, where they forget themselves and suffer meaninglessly. Only by suffering meaningfully can they rise.
The demon, Crystalman, is a sadistic parasite that feeds on life force. In a heightened state of awareness the main character sees sparks of a divine light within, to varying degrees, every living thing. Surrounding them is a miasmic vapour, Crystalman's atmosphere and what can be construed as the desire force, which gives rise to overwhelming sweetness and pleasure that is actually baleful and corrosive.
The other characters that fell in love with or had adapted to the world are shown to be mere masks worn by Crystalman. Despite all of them being convinced they knew the Good or were pursuing it.
Near the end Crystalman appears as a coy, effete man with a beautiful voice. His opposite, the true god who belongs to a completely alien otherworld, is fearsome, ugly and masculine. In the end he tells the main character exactly what he needs to hear.
