I'd appreciate some help on the average of numbers of handshapes in all signed languages in the world if possible? Thanks

@AdamCSchembri I find it interesting that the sign Fluke was only linked to VIC? I use it in NSW. My childhood sign that I enjoy using now with my sisters - nude-rude. (almost like Shame but different movement)

For some reason, I've always loved the sign meaning 'fluke' in Auslan (not my mother language, but my first sign language!): auslan.org.au/dictionary/wor…

What’s your favourite word or phrase in your mother tongue? This week, for #internationalmotherlanguageday we asked students and academics to share theirs, featuring various languages. Take a look and we hope you enjoy it as much as we did making it ❤️🗣️

A friend often points out that in our culture, we often don't introduce ourselves at first meeting, and I think he’s right. Wo do it when saying goodbye, if we plan to reconnect. The ‘Hi, my name is…’ approach is definitely something we’ve adopted from hearies. #DeafCulture

A question - how do we reframe the term from 'treatment' (ie hearing) to something else that deaf people need? 'provision of signs from birth' doesnt cut it like 'treatment'...

@DeafProgrammer @NaomiDoesWords Yes. It's the same in all deaf clubs when hearing people seem to have the buildings just inertia sites where deaf people gather. Really heartbreaking for me as I know what my grandparents, their peers, and my parents and their peers shared with me. Nothing that happened then now

I completely agree with you. I originated from the vibrant Deaf community in Adelaide, which has a history dating back to the 1880s. This community was a significant part of my life until they sold the spiritual place in 2012, which had been a second home to the Deaf community. It represented a real language, identity, genuine knowledge, and true Deaf culture, and it breathed life into me. I first entered that second home when I was a 16-year-old boy and 'lived' there until 2012. Today's Deaf community in Adelaide is not the same. I even handed over the archive of minutes and agenda books, worth over 100 years, to Deaf Connect for Deaf History after the closure of the Royal South Australian Deaf Society Inc.

I genuinely believe that a major barrier to deaf knowledge is academia’s issue with community knowledge. So much of deaf culture and history is passed on in this way and is commonly known, but not written down anywhere (certainly nowhere academia deems ‘credible’) 1/2

Wondered about this - are there any other latest on Deaf in this book, apart from this chapter? Any feedback? Ta

@CalumMedlock Not bad and I sense it needs some more modification- change the sign for search (the actual sign is really research rather than look-for?). Is the last word essential as part of seo or?

So what is it with people always wanting a universal sign language? I feel like I never see these type of comments when it comes to spoken languages

@DeafProgrammer I hate hate hate those "reactions" esp when I am in a serious meeting and I use some signs that the app picked up and sent up inappropriate ones. Sorry, but it's a frustrating part of the whole thing for me - it should be opt-in, not opt-out by default.

Welcome to a new golden era for Deaf communities worldwide, one that doesn't require keeping pace with the fast-moving hearing world. This could mark the beginning of using technology, like #MicrosoftTeams as shown in this video clip, enhanced with AI functionality, to revolutionise education for deaf children. By leveraging AI, we can significantly improve access to natural and sign languages through these platforms, fostering a more inclusive and effective learning environment. #accessibility #signlanguage #deaf #AI

I thought #MicrosoftTeams suddenly got a new feature, as when I gave a thumbs up on camera a thumbs up icon appeared. Just turns out that it's a new feature in #macOS tapping into the camera feed 😅🙈

@JeminaNapier @NoelOConnell15 That is the main reason why I haven’t resumed on my studies - can’t be bothered to deal with logistics and monetary burdens here in Australia… online is not cutting it either.
