A professor suspected AI was doing the homework. His solution changed everything. After a take-home midterm averaged an eye-popping 96%, a Brown University economics professor grew suspicious that many students may have relied on AI. While he said he couldn't prove it, he changed the final exam to an offline, in-person test instead. The results were dramatically different. The class average dropped to 48.6%. Eighteen students withdrew, nine skipped the final, and 19 failed the course. The professor says the experience shows colleges may need to rethink how they measure learning in the age of AI—not because AI exists, but because it's becoming harder to tell what students truly know. Is this evidence that AI is changing education, or does it show that traditional testing needs to evolve?
