I’ve been experiencing chaotic traffic, mental fatigue and anxiety in Mumbai, Delhi and Gurgaon for the past few days. There is a difference between scientific innovation ( extremely rare and mostly takes place in labs), technological innovation ( that you are talking about ) and business model innovation( that old uncle is talking about). All three play it's part in an economy. India doesn't have to show much on first two fronts so they are taking pride in third. It's human nature to take pride in what they have. For instance, what you find innovative is not innovative in my eyes. I only think scientific innovations are the real innovations that take humanity forward. Not some new software built on incremental functionality.

I was at a conference and an Indian uncle came up to me proudly extolling 10-minute delivery as an example of Indian innovation. I didn’t have the heart to tell him that delivering shampoo and chips faster is logistics optimization — not innovation. Innovation is creating things the world has never seen before.
