may 14, 2025. kempinski hotel gold coast city, accra. 150 people. one room. one question nobody in that room wanted to reduce to a slogan: when does "one africa, one market" stop being a conference theme and start being infrastructure? that was the energy walking into the 3i africa policy forum's second edition. co-built by @thebankofghana, @devbankghana, and GFTN. but the 2025 format was different. tighter. 150 of the most influential people in african digital finance, by invite only, and none of them were there just to hear speeches. BoG governor Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama(@DrJPAsiama) made that clear from the jump. he didn't come with aspirations. he came with a deadline: a fully interconnected african financial ecosystem by 2030. and before the day was done, @thebankofghana announced a three-way partnership with @CentralBankRw and GFTN to launch the next-gen digital payment infrastructure project. that was the floor. the four panels built on it. panel one hit the regulatory gap. Kwame Oppong, then-director of fintech and innovation at the bank of ghana, was direct: "MSMEs and individuals will remain locked in fragmented markets and the promise of AfCFTA will not reach the people it was designed to benefit." panel two got specific about SMEs. the backbone of african economies. the businesses that generate the most employment, serve the most people, and keep getting cut out of regional commerce because the digital pipes running underneath it were not built with them in mind. panel three put stablecoins and digital assets directly in front of the IMF. literally. Luca Ricci of the IMF sat in the moderator's chair while candace kelly of @StellarOrg and kwame oppong debated what responsible digital asset adoption actually looks like on a continent that has its own context, its own regulatory realities, and cannot afford to import someone else's mistakes. panel four asked the hardest question in the room. not "how do we attract capital to africa?" but "what conditions do we actually build so that africa is where serious investors choose to be, not as charity, but as strategy?" Sanjay Thakar of euroexim bank, trish Amoah-Ntim of verod, and @Odomfoneba of startupbootcamp afritech answered it specifically. africa is not waiting for external infrastructure to arrive. it is building its own, from accra, with central banks and fintechs and investors in the same room, deciding together what the next chapter looks like. that was may 2025.
