A write-in ballot allows the voter to cast their vote for someone not listed on the ballot. They can write in the name of anyone, including their dog if they choose.
Such a vote is usually a sign of dissatisfaction of the above nominations for the election. People write legitimate candidates or pranks.
I have written in None of the Above on my local county ballots over the years.
Write-in candidates seldom make any impact on the election results. Write-in ballots are not even mentioned in polling results.

To my American friends I’m so confused as to what a ‘WRITE IN BALLOT’ means.
Does that mean a candidate’s paperwork wasn’t in when the ballots were printed? Surely having to write a name in means less votes?
