On a personal level, getting to lead us deeper into an open source development model was a big part of why I wanted to join. This is just the kind of neat, open CRDT sync implementation I always wanted to have for my own apps.

We just made open source the key parts of the Liveblocks server stack (lblcks.io/nys2qqB) — the sync engine and a dev server that enables you to run it anywhere for dev and test: bare metal, Docker, GitHub CI, K8s, what have you.

Kyllä tolla Muskilla on lähtenyt mopo käsistä.

@Villavelius @BrettButtliere I’m also convinced that the culture the early adopters have established won’t just be undone, especially because it isn’t centrally lead: we are social animals and we take behavioural cues from people whose community we join.

@Villavelius @BrettButtliere I do think there are some intentional differences that also contribute: there’s the CWs and codes of conduct in specific community servers, there’s no algorithmic mechanism to make discord a loud trend in front of Everyone, there’s server level ban threat to guide moderators.

@jani_penttinen @Setok Charitable, but no. Quite obviously manbaby’s foul play. Pretty insane really. The .com is just a straightforward DNS A record pointing at the .org, owner for both domains is the same (perfectly legit Twitter competitor) company.

Ok that’s just nasty. The joinmastodon. com link is being blocked here (main official link for info and signups to #mastodon). That kind of bullshit is a major turnoff for me now on Twitter.

@klausenhauser I like open things too. You’ll find all my papers and assoc source open from back when I did that 😊 My point is, and I think you understand this, an exclusive server for Austrian cat navel scientists on Mastodon can talk with anyone else, server choice has 0 to do with openness.

It is a massive deal. Science is open. Science is diversity not just people with papers. And the comment below speaks of elitist behaviour that what most people in science wants to get rid of.

@schmittlauch @JedMSP Good day to you too, sir! I shall maintain my position, thank you very much: to be clear fediscience.org has a particular policy for opening accounts, presuming because of a specific mission they run their instance for. That is not a big deal in a federated network.

@BonfieldJames @klmr @aylwyn_scally I’m with you, similarly a sort of serendipity dial of how sensitively to reach outside my self chosen connections would be lovely a form of control. Willing to bet you’ll see neither of these here though, and most likely they’ll land in an open source, hacking friendly place.

Amusing how Twitter v Mastodon has got scientists talking about algorithms as if they were inherently evil.

@BonfieldJames @aylwyn_scally @mz2 At least up until a few years ago when you joined you were forced/strongly encouraged to immediately follow some accounts, and the chronological timeline was made up solely of their tweets. If you skipped that step, the timeline was indeed initially empty.

@mz2 @BonfieldJames There are complaints about twitter's ownership that I agree with, and complaints about its supposedly toxic nature that I'm dubious about. I think most of the drama is just people. And often those criticising hardest are the ones putting stuff by M*sk and Tr*mp in my timeline..

@JedMSP Also, have to add, this Mastodon zealot has been on Twitter since 2007 😆 The Twitter of 2022 I suppose is running out of tweets to show from 1st order connections, so instead I see your exquisite tweets now. I do apologise for distress, on Mastodon would totally have used a CW.
