Unpacking the Five Core Metaphors of Liangzhou Melody Liangzhou Melody is far more than a straightforward story, it’s a wounderful composed melody of metaphors concerning the state, power, and the fragility of the human-beings. Now I am going to unpack five core metaphors of this story, so that we can better go back to the turbulent yet strangely magnificent era. "Being immortal in history" and "Returning home" In Liangzhou Melody, being immortal in history is more like a central issue of Zhang Yichao's life. However, Lian Daozi's grandfather stood in stark contrast to Zhang Yichao in choosing between returning home and going down in history; going to Chang’an as a political hostage or remaining in Liangzhou to reclaim Hexi. The reason why he refused to return to Chang’an is not only an act of ambition, rather, the Chang’an of his time is no longer the flourishing capital of the Kaiyuan era. "Chang’an" and "Home" Throughout the plot, almost every character expressed a hope to return to Chang’an, to return home. Yet the home they longed for is not the devastated city in reality, but an illusion of prosperity, stability and peace. Similarly, home is not a physical shelter at present, but a memory of family, unity, and warmth. By focusing on a group of travellers trapped by a sandstorm in a tiny inn, and staging a beautiful but fragile bubble-like feast, Liangzhou Melody depicts the hardship of ordinary people in a chaotic world. Whether Han or other ethnic groups, everyone is chasing a dream that reality can no longer fulfill. "The Glazed Drum" and the "Tears of Guanyin" In this story, only the “Tears of Guanyin” can sound the “Glazed Drum”, and the crowd follows only those capable of striking it. According to Paper Moon, the Tears of Guanyin may signify both political marriage (such as Cao Jing’s alliance with other power) and more abstractly, the abandonment of compassion. This reveals a cruel truth: achieving historical greatness often demands the sacrifice of humanity. As illustrated by Zhao Guangyi’s moral compromises, 'too much' human nature can become an obstacle to be a great man. Precisely for this reason, Zhang Yichao finally gave up his chance at being immortal in history. "The Perfumer" and the "Ghost Woman" The tale of the ghost woman is the most desolate metaphor for "returning home" theme. Ghost woman represents those who long to return, while her lover is the "home". There’s an old saying: "近乡情怯(The closer one gets to home, the more timid one becomes)." When the ghost woman finally met her lover, she almost wished herself blind and deaf. The people of Liangzhou were in the same boat. From our God's eyes view, Chang’an, the place where their hearts were, was already destined to decline, and the home in their memories was gone forever. Zhang Yichao threw his heart into reclaiming Liangzhou, but the Imperial Court viewed him as a venomous snake at their feet, and a threat worse than foreign powers. In such a world, ignorance is almost a mercy, so that the historical glory and home could still survive. The Pipa (The Lute) The Pipa serves as the core metaphor throughout Liangzhou Melody, just as cotton forms the hidden core in Burlap Sack. For Lian Daozi, pipa is not merely a kind of instrument, but a carrier of his grandfather, his Chang'an, and his home. He did not play the pipa during the feast, because his memory of home faded in a crumbling world. He lost the shape of his home. He only found his music when the city walls were finally breached. At that moment, he clearly realized—home was not a place, but a state of mind. While playing the pipa during a bloody strife might seem absurd on paper, it represents the resilience of an ordinary peolple— those who, in a world on the brink, cling to a certain belief in order to survive.
